OM617/603 Balancer removal

Im going to have to do a front crank seal on my 617 and 603 engines soon. I have read that the 617 has two dowels that cannot be reused and must be pressed in and ground off when reinstalling the balancer. Is this also the case with the 603? I know it has just one dowel pin, but can it be reused?

The OM603 uses a Woodruff key. It's easier than the OM617 in this regard.

I think the trick with the OM617 dowels is that you must be very careful to clock the balancer correctly to the crank. The two dowels are not exactly 180 deg apart, so if you orient the balancer wrong, the dowels will jam and shear when you try to pull the balancer on. Also, you must be very careful to get the dowels started correctly and not cocked. If you mess up, the crankshaft can be ruined, which would be a very bad day.

Concerning damaging the crankshaft (which I am questioning) what I remember reading is that members who have had their crank damper come loose on the shaft (it did not come off) have had the dowel holes elongated and the dowel pins ruined.

They were able to re-drill the dowel pin holes oversize to match fatter dowel pins they got from the dealer.

When you get the dowel pins from the dealer they are longer then needed and have to be cut off and ground flush.

I think there is 2 threads on that but from back in 2008-2010.
