1987 190D Turbo: Any factory 5spds?

I'm selling my 87 190D Turbo (with the swapped in manual gearbox from a 260E) here & then listed on eBay too. An eBayer has challenged my statement in the listing: "Only model year in North America for the W201 body style to feature a turbo-charged diesel engine. No North American versions came from the factory with a manual transmission, so this is truly a "rare" car!"

He insists I'm "incompetent" & and that W201 turbo examples came from the factory with manual transmissions. I told him that may have been true in Europe & other regions, but not on this continent...that's why some of us have gone to lengths to swap in a 5-spd gearbox.

Am I wrong in saying all the 87 190DT's sold here were automatics? I've really tried to find something official beyond discussion post banter to say this, no such luck. Just want to see if what I've always assumed is, indeed, incorrect.

Probably not gonna change this fellow's mind, but just wanna know for my own sake.

Who cares what some idiot on the internet thinks. Tell him to go **** himself. They never sold any turbo diesel 5psd W201 or W124 anywhere in the world. Those only appeared with the W202 and W210.

Talking Uh, Oh ~

Bookman : but you ARE 'crazy' ! : you think owning , driving and maintaining an old Mercedes automobile is a good thing..... .

I wish my knees would allow me to still drive a stick shift in traffic, I'd buy someone's converted W123 five cylinder and pay the freight for a 5 speed tranny in a heartbeat .

Cant deny that, listing it on eBay was the other crazy move. Silly me thinking that a bidder would follow through on his purchase! So, the W201 remains in my garage & up for sale.

I cant imagine parting with my W123 wagon though. That thing will outlive us all!

I've had several random people get all excited and offer to buy my 300D/5spd both on the street and here on the forum. Ok, make me an offer. But then they want to pay less for it because it's a stick. I laugh and drive away.

Thumbs up Manual Gearboxes

I hear you guys loud and clear .

I recently bought a shop truck, it's a base model with five speed box and I've discovered I still enjoy rowing the gears though through commuting traffic not so much .

Next week I'm going to go look at an old English car, also with manual gear box, maybe I'll buy and enjoy driving a clutch again.....

Was that 87 NA 2.5 converted from an automatic, or came from the factory with the 5 spd?

Not one. Mercedes did not send 190D turbos with manual transmissions to the US. If you find one, it's a shade tree conversion.

@Nate, you will be forever working on the British car. I had a 75 MGB bought new. The exhaust system fell off on Lake Shore Drive during rush hour when there were < 5,000 mi on the clock. It needed a head gasket soon after. The alternator went out and the intake manifold cracked while still under warranty.

I took the spare tire out of the trunk to have room for a tool box. I loved driving that car but it wouldn't stay running. This is common on MGBs, Midgets, MGA & B, Triumphs Jaguars etc.
