Don't drive that many miles any more, usually do 4,000 mile changes on everything, just because Gramps used to say "Oil is cheaper than metal". Wasteful I know, but safe for sure.

M1 0w 40 -- cheap and readily available and MB approved!

If it is pre-2007, you can use Mobil 1 0w 40. This is what I use in my 95 E300 and 2005 E320 CDI. Meets MB 229.5 which is the standard the pre-2007 CDIs were built for. Original OCI called for 13k miles on CDI under "normal " drving conditions. I change between 10k and 13k as mine sees mostly highway and long hauls cross country. E300 gets 7500 mi. OCI which is what manual calls for but that was assumed to be using traditional oil. Probably could extend that with the synthetic oil.

At times I do wonder about the 229.5 approval, what the various considerations are the make it MB's recommendation for the OM648. I suspect that there are some marginal fuel economy issues that I care nothing about. My ONLY concern is protecting the engine and making it last 500k miles. Therefore I suspect that I'm better off with M1 TDT, Rotella T6, etc...

From what I see, the 229.51 spec ups the performance significantly. I believe it's graphed in the Lubrizol chart posted earlier in this thread.

Here is the current crop of tested 229.51 oils. https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.51_en.html

Our owners manuals call for 229.5 oil. I thought 229.51 had lowered ash to allow dpf filters and there was a downside to this.

MB recommends at 10k miles intervals, I have too many cars so to keep up on what oil change intervals are, I like to stick with 1k mi per quart of oil and round it down, the Om648 takes ~8.8 quarts is what about 8k miles is good time to change it.

I've start using rotella T6 they've reformulated in 2012 for DPF and have been using for a lot of my common rail diesel ie Ram ecodiesel, and even in older diesels (soon 1994 S350d) It's a very stout oil with 5w-40 with, which what these engines ran originally with the Mobil 1 ESP 5w-40* (discontinued).

However the differences are that shell has higher sulfurated ash in their oils @ =0.9% (Shell 2013) while mobil 1 formula M ESP which had very low sulfurated ash <0.6% (Mobil 1 PDF 2016). Lower the sulfurated ash the better for the DPF performance and lifespan, however at a cost of reduce anti-oxidant and anti-wear additives in the oils. (Watson, Wong, Brownawell; et al)

MB recommendation oil 229.31 or 229.51 or EURO oil spec ACEA C3-10 which is low ash oils, with sulfurated ash <0.8%

Shell is ACEA E9-16 which is not MB recommendation but comparatively is significantly better in all aspects of in protection and is a heavy duty grade oil, the sulfurated ash is =0.9% which slightly higher then MB recommendation thus falls off their recommendation.

So if your not comfortable with running slightly higher sulfurated ash levels oils (ie higher antiwear/antioxidation) then run MB spec 229.31 or 229.51 or euro spec ACEA C3-10, ie Motul x-clean 5w-40 or 5w-30, Mobil 1 ESP (5w-30 ONLY!), or Following oils can be found at walmart shelf Pennzoil Euro L 5W-30, Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-40.

Here's a very useful tool on what manufacturer oil spec requires
https://online.lubrizol.com/relperftool/pc.html#

I've made one with MB 229.51 vs MB229.31 vs euro spec ACEA C3-16 oil (our approved MB oil)

You must be looking at the wrong manual...either that or your manual was misprinted (has been known to happen). It is 8 US quarts with filter change. EDIT: It looks like the 2005 manual had a misprint...discussed in other forums.

See page 484.

i have (2) 2005 e320 cdi's and i've been able to get the liquimoly 5w-30 full synthetic that meets the spec for $70 for (2) 5 L jugs.....last time around they accidentally sent me this other stuff (Castro edge LL) that was actually around $50/ea for the 5 qt jug....this also met the spec so i used it.
i've been going 7500 as a baseline but i'm lazy and probably go over that number more often than not!

Its a bit expensive so I'd like to try another oil.

Does the 2005 CDI require synthetic or synthetic blend oil, and what manufacturers do you guys recommend?

Also, at what intervals do you recommend changing the oil?

Thanks
