Resealing Power Steering Gearbox
Hi All,
The power steering gearbox on my 1984 300D is just leaking way too much. With almost 200,000 miles on it, the steering feels like new. I have driven a bunch of other W123s that have had sloppy steering. This weekend, I pulled a gearbox out of a W123 in a junkyard. I am planning to run this in my car while I rebuild mine. I found this article to help: http://www.davidpetryk.net/Mercedes/Steering.htm Does anyone have any recommendations on a rebuild kit -- what to buy and where? I would hate to do all of that work and then reinstall just to find out I had used some cheap o-ring or whatever that was not up for the task. Thanks, Dkr. |

For the reseal kit, I'd probably look at what Pelican Parts sells. That or NAPA. Matureo a member on this board, I think reseals MB gear boxes. I did rebuild one. I did get an Inch-Lb torque wrench to set the preloads. There are two preloads on a gear box. The main shaft and the sector shaft. Its the difference between sloppy and siezed up. Watch out for the recurculating balls. That unit will unwind real quick.

Here's a thread by our own Stretch with more detail than the one linked to. What a feeling it will be! A properly adjusted W123 / W116 / W126 power steering box Don't bother with the dealer, it's too expensive on this one and unnecessary. The brand I use is Hebmuller and I wouldn't trust any other. They've never let me down with missing pieces or substandard crap. I get mine through WorldPac, my local CarQuest guy gets them for me.
