OM617 cam timing spec

So I was able to find that Max timing chain stretch allow is 4deg. But I can not find information or any one talking about timing be advanced instead delay.

What is max advanced allowed, and even why would I have the advancement?

When you rotated the Engine which direction did you use? Should be clockwise from the front of the Car.

Maybe someone installed an offset Key and installed it wrong.

It might be that you have to do the 2mm Method to be sure.

clockwise, I did a bit back and forward when the belt was slipping but generally clockwise. Did I break something ?

The PO set he has put new chain at some point in last 3 years. And It is cold so maybe that is the reason ?

Way back around 2008 some people figured out how much difference there would be if the timing chain was one tooth off. Which I cannot remember.

But the Manual has that in 20,000 the chain can acquire 2 degrees of stretch (kind of an initial wear in) and that is normal.
So if it was installed one tooth off and that equaled say 6 degrees off before top dead center and there was 2 degrees of chain stretch after 20,000 of stretch that could have it about where it is now. But that is extreme speculation.

I turnover engine few time with starter and when only clock clockwise without back and forward and now I read like 0.5 - 1 positive. So maybe going a bit back was "breaking" the read.

But in general this grow aliment feel not very precise next time I may do 2m method.

As far a performance difference - I tried several different setting (offset keys) and noticed no difference in my top speed at the track so I'm thinking stock spec and a tight chain is the way to go. It might make a difference in starting, smoothness, fuel economy, etc. but none of those are significant to me.

Timing Advance

So bizarre. My new to me 300TD has the exact same measurement. PO said timing chain was replaced as well. Car is pretty sluggish compared to my old 300d. I saw like 5* ATDC of stretch on the new timing chain on my old car. I am wondering if it is a tooth off. I will probably be checking for an offset key sometime this week.

1 tooth is 18 degrees on the crank on the om617

page 4 has a list of available offset keys:

Alright, then that eliminates the tooth off possibility.
