END OF AN ERA 1995 E300 W124
 

So after 11 years, a motor and trans swamp among the major caretaking along with countless other odds and ends our well loved Benz fell victim to a tree falling. It pushed the quarter panel under the trunk and was picked up for salvage this morning. Just shy of 300K miles, we got an astonishing $3,000 for the value.

You let the insurance company take your car away for just $3000 with that little dent? You got screwed.

Apparently tjts1 missed the part about 300,000 miles.

Nothing, but insurance companies don't see it that way.

A bad deal is a bad deal. For $3000 OP should've been able to keep the car with a clean title. When you simply accept the insurance company's first offer you get screwed.

Wow, that is a HUGE loss. What was the point of calling the insurance company?

Yea, what is the problem with 300k, my 95 E300 is at 290k and is probably the most reliable vehicle in the yard.

the car had other issues, would any of you have offered up more than 3K for it? I'm happy with that number, I'm in the insurance biz and can tell you its a lot more than I've seen people with far newer vehicles get.

What happened to the first motor?

It was leaking a ton of fuel and oil and also broke off a glow plug in the head. I bought an identical car with the intent to keep that but found out when I went for state inspection that it was in worse shape than mine from accident (I knew it was hit) so ended up swapping the motor in.

Must be easier to sell high mileage Mercedes in Beverly Hills. When I got my W211 wagon, I sold a 94 E420 and was happy to get $2800. It had a bit over 300,000 miles, engine was still awesome, didn't burn or drip oil. But there was that original transmission taking a second and half to go into reverse. Worrisome, and was bound to fail eventually.

Is there anything else wrong with it? Body rust?

I would have fixed the dent and went on with life.

You could have gotten at least $4 or 5k at sale if not more. 300k miles isn't a death sentence on a w124. Especially if there wasn't rust.

An operable car that passes inspection is worth at least a couple grand more. The wrecker will probably fix and flip it.

the E300D is still commanding money even with that many miles. I got a pretty good payout on my E300D which was smashed pretty hard and I repaired it very very decently with the payout.

It was a real pleasure to drive after that - then finally the flood took it.
