Got my antique tag!
in NC, the car now just has to be older than 25 years. it used to be 35 years before.
the car is only 33 years old but still sexy and as fast as any modern car. i am just extremely happy i never sold it. it was almost for sale about half a dozen times in the 10 years i've owned it.

'Antique' License Tags
? Is there a reduction in annual fees or insurance ? .
? Restrictions on how many miles you can drive it per year ? .

That's great! Used to have a 1994 E420 which causes me to think of the W124 as a "Modern" car.

the only 'perk' is that i don't need to take it to JiffyLube yearly for its inspection. since it does not have a CEL and i maintain it well, it always passes anyway. i have to pay an extra $10 yearly for the fancy tag. it's a daily driver so in terms of insurance it's the same as any other beater. i only have collision on it. i pay $180 a year for insurance. i paid $2k for it about 10 years ago.

the one with the talking reptile with the british accent. i am sure it varies from state to state. but since it only collision, it's basically meant to protect the car i hit. since i drive like an old man that i am, i don't expect to hit anyone (knock on wood). however, if someone were to hit me, they will give me $1000 and tell me to get lost and total the car. i called Hagerty to get an insurance quote for an agreed upon value for the car. they said that since i drive the car everyday, it does not qualify. i guess they want garage queens.

Check with Safeco regarding agreed value. I think one of my cars has it. It probably shouldn't because it's not really worth much in the market and I'll sell it if I ever get the other one painted. This one has too much rust in the back where the tail lights are. I stepped the value up because of the parts that are in it to bring some of the systems up to spec and I was planning to fix it.

Huh, in AL if you get an antique tag you're not allowed to DD it, not allowed to carry passengers, not allowed to use it to drive back and forth to work, etc. Both my car and my 190D are considered antiques by the state but I have to run normal plates so I can actually use them.

I'm 24, I paid $217 for my 1st month insurance payment on my 1998 ZX2, insanity.
My e300 was like 135 a month.

Normal driving usage not allowed plus other restrictions with Antique plates in most parts if not all of Canada.
Liability insurance is what protects you from the claims of your misdeeds. Collision coverage is to repair your own vehicle. |

Saying classic/collector car insurance companies only want garage queens isn't true. They are not in the business of insuring commuter and/or regular use cars. Similar to if you call the "company with the lizard with the British accent" and ask them to cover a car used at the race track, then when they tell you they're not in that business, saying they only want garage queens.
My classic car insurance company will allow me to buy up to two days per week of commuting/regular use but that's the limit for them. They actually dropped the mileage cap a few years ago but again, one is not supposed to be commuting or running errands in it, which is where most losses occur. barry12345 is correct, liability insurance is what covers you from claims of your misdeeds, comprehensive covers damage when the car isn't moving and animal hits, collision covers damage to your vehicle when it is moving. I'm not an insurance agent, just a nerd who actually reads insurance policies when he buys them. |

I'm also in NC, and my understanding is that the antique plate allows an exemption on taxable value. I think an application is still required. I have a standard plate on my '78. I also don't have to do annual inspections. The inspection exemption is by year, not by plate.

Some places in north America do charge a yearly direct tax on vehicles. Our usual system in Canada is to hide the equivelant in the periodic renewal of the registration and plating sticker for the car. Getting higher all the time.
My drivers license is now a five year up front premium. I almost wanted to ask what if I expire in a year? Being 77 the possibility exists. On retrospect several things went through my mind. I would still have a valid drivers license when dead. So I might need it where I am going? Or I can take it back in for a partial rebate? We have a system here that to me is fair. When your doctor finds you are unfit to drive he is to report it. Personally I feel that is not a bad solution. I have no wish to be driving in a mental or other state that presents a serious risk to others. Actually at about 70 I got some questions before the drivers license was re issued. When about 75 not a peep from them. Of some disservice to the public. I understand the liability purchased amount can be very small in relation to the possibility of a claim size. Insurance unfortunately is getting more expensive. In Canada you must have a minumin of 1 million liability. Personally I think this is sane if you have paid up assets. Or a decent equity stake. Two million is better. Last edited by barry12345; 01-11-2020 at 01:06 PM. |

I just renewed my 'CLEMSON,' tag for the tenth year.
Most states won't let you drive an antique tagged car daily.
