Crankcase Breather Hose

Hi All,

The crankcase breather hose on my 1984 300D is broken. I ordered a replacement but it did not come with the flat part attachment on the air filter bracket. I found an entire line from Kent / M$$ource site that is new and am planning to order it.

Is it ok to run the car temporarily (as in a week) with no breather hose? Or should I try to cobble something temporarily? I would rather not do a temp job as I don't want it to bind or get plugged.

Thanks,

Dkr.

It won't hurt anything but it will make a mess underhood. Back in the day, all crankcase vents were open to the atmosphere but routed downward to dump onto the road surface.

Refer to the response by "Rocky Raccoon". The answer to your question should be fairly obvious.....

It will make an oily mess of ALL of the engine bay, potentially damage components either from oil saturation or the cleanup process and although remote, create a fire hazard over time from oil on manifolds and exhaust components.

Put something together to direct and catch the oil fumes.

Good luck!!!

Post Crank Case Ventilation Hose

Because the Diesel engine, unlike Gasoline engines, maintain a very high quantity of oil droplets in the air expelled from the hose ~ this is why there's a complicated cyclonic oil / air separator in the air cleaner ~ in these engines it's normal to have a lot of oil mist and droplets being expelled so if the hose isn't connected you'll have not just massively oil vapors coming out but also a lot of tiny oil droplets that will spray all over the entire engine compartment and Diesel contaminated oil / air attacks all the plastics and rubbers under the hood, why it's to important to keep after oil leaks, seeps and weeps .

Typical German engineering : it's wonderful as long as you keep after it but allow it to get oily and you get a serious domino effect that will make you hate the car .

Easier to just keep after the endless little things that always need minor touching .

This simple hose if left open will ruin the motor mounts in a matter of months for example .
