I replaced my guide rod mount.
It was a pretty scary job I didn't have anyway to take out the lower control arm. So I did some research on how to replace it without removing the LCA it involved pulling the LCA with a pullstrap very scary!. After alot of cursing hitting things it ended up pretty well. I am so glad I got this job done my old mount was SHOT! like the tire had so much freeplay in it was crazy. https://imgur.com/a/RMcAmfT full album Last edited by Antique; 02-03-2020 at 11:42 PM. |

Yikes, that is a very scary setup...I don't see a jackstand (or double stacked tires) offering support if the car should shift.
The factory jack is barely suitable for roadside tire changes on solid surfaces. The jack footprint is very small. Should you need to do this job again, after supporting the car with jackstands, you can use the jack horizontally in the wheelwell in place of the pullstrap. About to tackle guide rod bushings on '81 300SD EDIT: I just viewed the full imgur.com album and saw that you did use a tire as a support in case the car fell off the jack (double stacked tires would definitely be safer).

OUCH ! .
I'm glad you survived . Safety knows no season, a human popped underneath a vehicle looks like a watermelon dropped off the roof, not pretty . When I changed my W123 sway bar bushings I used a VW crank typ jack to move the control arm forward, it's similar to the Mercedes jack .

So, I too used the winch method on my w126, however the much safer way to do this it to hook the other end to the front sub frame or tow hook of the car itself. That way you can't pull it off of the jack stands.

I am about to do this very same project on my 91 560sec. It would be very helpful If you have any pictures of where you placed the strap
Also I don’t know if I am going to explain this Correctly but I will give it a try. I want to replace the bushing in the lower control arm that the guide rod connects to however, the Bolt that secures this tod to the LCA IS BRING BLOCKED BY THE bottom of the spring., so I guess I have to remove the spring ? Yes??? Thank you |

yes it is blocked by the spring so to access you need to take the spring out. if you are taking the spring out you don't need to use the strap method.

OP, please don't do that again. There is lots of information available on refurbishing your front end. Climbing under the car only supported by a regular side of the road jack and essentially pulling the car forward isn't included in the instructions.
I remember a pic where the guy was under a car tilted to one side on 2 wheels supported by a 2x4. The pic was in a series of "nominations for the Darwin Award".
