Low ash oil was not common locally up here in Canada. So when I decided to use the original transmission oil from a dealer. After my suggesting their give me a discount.

I asked for the price on their engine base oil for the engine as well. Turned out to be cheaper than what was available other wise. So you might want to talk to a Mercedes dealer.

Historically Volkswagon specialty type oils have been supplied to them by Castrol. You cannot buy the Castrol low ash oil in Canada under their own label. The volkswagon oil comes in a non descriptive plastic bottle in quarts. With a different part number from their other base oils.

I really did not want to fool around with aftermarket oils in that tiptronic transmission either. Plus they are no cheaper.

A word of caution to those that also own the tiptronic transmissions. Probably Mercedes owners as well. The changed transmission oil types well before the latest tiptronic type tranmissions. Plus doubled the price. I think the transmission oil type change was around 2015.

It is really expensive I believe. Use only the Mercedes supplied oil and if not changing it yourself. Verify what is going in. These transmission are just too expensive to risk anything with them. Plus with Volkswagon you do not want a denial of claim if you cannot prove receipts their oils are in the mechanical systems.

Barry, I was a bit confused reading your post. But I think I know what you said:
- use MB transmission fluid
- check if dealer has competitive pricing for low ash engine oil.

Actually, if you check bebo, mb do provide a list of lubricants that meet their specs for both transmission and engine. It can sometimes be a bit confusing, so if unsure, using dealer supplied fluids is a safe bet.

Yesterday afternoon I hooked my small enclosed ut trailer on and drove a round for a half hour or so getting up to 70 mph on the limited access. The car worked fine. The transmission shifted around a bit on hills but did not seem excessive. The owners manual does not give much in specific directions except to lock it in a gear if the transmission hunts too much.

I am heading to Columbus Oh with that combination today. I have the trailer sold and am delivering it there. I will visit with my daughter's family as well.

I base what I think on Mercedes probably using the same type of automatic transmission as Volkswagon. A double clutch tiptronic type. I may be wrong.

Volkswagon went from running the clutches wet to dry in 2015. So why anther far more expensive transmission oil is being used now for them makes me wonder.

I do notice in the wives car that the clutches do not totally release at idle.

The 722.9 changed fluids about halfway through its run. I believe the switch was made concurrently with the W211 -> W212 and W164 -> W166 changeover. But I’m not 100% certain on that.

Pentosin makes compliant fluids for both types.

Older 722.9 take a red fluid, Pentosin calls it ATF 134. This can also be used in a 722.6 BTW.

Newer 722.9 take a blue fluid, Pentosin calls it ATF 134 FE. It cannot be used in the 1st gen 722.9 nor the 722.6.

As long as you use the right fluid for your transmission you will be fine. I recommend using a good pump as you have to fill from the bottom.

I know my 08 E320 and 08 ML320 take the red fluid
And the 13 E350 and 14 ML350 take the blue fluid

*cue the scene from the Matrix...

Looks like I only got 13 to 14 towing at between 65 and 70. I expected better than that but there also was headwinds so that probably hurt it. It towed beautifully and was not much affected by the wind.

Thats a lot of weight moving along....the ML250 weighs 4,750 empty! + trailer!

I know people who daily drive silverados and f150's who barely get that with an empty truck

Headwinds make a big difference, in a strong headwind in my GLK I'm lucky to break 30mpg on the freeway but if the air is still or a tailwind it can be 35-37mpg @80mph

Two complaints about this car:
1. The gas pedal is controlled by some computer apparently because if I mash the throttle and want to go fast it takes its sweet time bout responding. I am gonna get killed before I remember to allow for this!
2. The brakes are very very sensitive! I cannot put them on softly enough to avoid jerking to a stop. Can I get harder brake pads and correct this?

You might find it better in Sports mode. Otherwise I think it is in a higher gear.

I got used to the accelerator feel and dont recall any problem with the original brakes.

I actually loved the feel of the car. Mind you, we in usa now and the price of diesel negates any better consumption the diesel had.
