i did most of what you suggested today. I was able to talk to a human for a few minutes but could not find my vin and called him back. Of course as soon as I hung up I found it in about one minute.....after that I was unable to get back to him. So I filed a question on line.

I might just park it and drive my dodge and Studebaker, or I might just buy a cheap gasser wagon.

I also found my "warranty" and read through it. I am pretty sure it will be 100% worthless.

In my case bad nox sensors just caused it to be running at reduced throttle response and power levels a bit, and it seemed to regen more often, likely due to sub-optimal operation making more soot, no visible smoke or any other issues otherwise. I was also able to make the error go away 400ish miles at a time by clearing the code a few times while waiting for it to get in for repair.

I haven't had any issues with the ad-blue system at all, but the nox sensors were about $1200. They replaced them with no labor (which was 4.5hrs) since I just had the exhaust warranty work completed last august (this was in January-April of this year).

Since replacing the nox sensors, zero issues or errors and it runs flawlessly....5,500+ miles so far.

In your case I'd look more into the settlement info and when that will start to take place. Parking it for a bit might be the best option to wait for that to get rolling. They need to fix 85% of the vehicles within 2 years of the start date set by the courts....so they will need to be getting going on that pretty quick.

Yes, I got a call from mbusa about 5 pm. I kept her on the phone for a good long while insisting to speak to her boss but she stood tight. No loaner car and no rental car.

I probably will park it until I can get them to fix it.

So I might buy something practical for a daily temporary driver.

Did MBUSA offer any information about the court directed repair program or repair under warranty or goodwill? I imagine MBUSA will be compensated by Daimler-Benz in Germany, so maybe also must wait until the program is in place.

You have the AC Cobra - Is it not practical or reliable

I replaced my GLK250 with a new Subaru Outback. Turned out to be a good move. But I haven't driven it since we got back from USA in March. My 85 W123 is practical and reliable

I did a search for a 123 wagon. I found one for 20 grand or so....not pristine. I would buy one if I could get one like new I think.

She pretended to know nothing about it.

$20k for a w123 wagon? Sounds like a lot! It would need to be mint. You could get a late model Subaru for that. A w210 might be a low cost option. We have had ours for 19 years.

MBUSA will surely pretend the settlement doesn't exist until its fully in place. Seems to be how all corporations function these days. I'd just park it and wait a bit for that to fall into place. I'm tempted to keep a second bluetec around and drive both as long as possible. R-class bluetec would be a nice replacement for my wagon eventually

Looks like the final date for enforcement/finalizing the settlement is set for January 25th. Owners also receive financial compensation on top of the repairs/warranties.

Modern diesels are not for the faint of heart. Unless you can do your own work. Or there is existing warranty.

They cheated to get around serious carboning up issues. Not to save fuel especially. The normal erg system function had to be eliminated. Or production of these engines stopped.

After the fix I can only hope the addition of the egr is less than it could or should be for compliance. Volkswagon agreed to put the whole engine under the extended warranty with the changes.

If we desired to keep the wives Passat diesel. After the warranty. Since there are no pollution checks here. I would have the egr circuit shut off.

Since it is illegal to do that it may be hard to find anyone doing it. It may fall into the 25,000 dollar fine area. I am quite interested in how the Mercedes extended warranty will be written. Maybe the premium diesel I was told to use in the wives Passat can help. Or perhaps not as the issue happens after combustion basically.

How replacement parts can be so expensive on these engines is also another issue. Or transmission work.

Other than the exhaust system being more complex, gas cars are right up there with the diesels in overall complexity. Many modern gassers are direct injection with turbos and high pressure fuel systems just like the diesels....they still have at least one cat on the exhaust, price one of those out, many aren't far off from a DPF, though overall less likely to have issues I guess(not guaranteed).

Electric will slowly but surely take over....VW just released a new electric crossover, which I am sure will sell plenty. And MB has electric models coming soon too.

Used car prices are incredible these days. My used C7 convertible M7 will garner more dollars now, than it did when new! However, I got an incredible deal on it off MSRP! GLWFAUC these days...… My '06 E320 CDI bought 7 years ago, will garner over 60% of what I paid for it!

Used prices have been strong for a while. I sold my 420SEL about 1.5 years ago for ~70% of what I paid for it....after 8 years of ownership and 55,000+ miles added to it.

I have resolved myself that the benz will not be fixed anytime real soon. I will park it until then. I think I will buy something to drive as a sort of loaner until then. I will look for something not too expensive which will not depreciate too much....a small wagon, suv, pickup or convertible.

Sounds like a good plan. Good luck in finding something that will get you through.
