2005 e320cdi-- is Voltage regulator replaceable?

Just reading some w211 stuff... seems like a common "wear" item on the w211

But looking up the part "Voltage regulator"--- don't really find it as separate part for the e320 cdi versus rest of MB's???

please educate me-- or would entire Alternator need to be replaced???

thx

The Bosch AL0851X is a very common alternator. Amazon lists several voltage regulators, along with several other sites. If you want a better guarantee of fitment, I'm betting Pelican Parts can get it with a phone call.

Part # 003 154 65 06

From the school of hard knocks

This platform uses an alternator that is controlled by “LIN Bus”. It does not have the traditional D+ wire.

I went though two NAPA rebuilt alternators before going to the dealer for a legit MB remanufactured alternator. The rebuilders don’t understand how to verify the LIN bus is working.

Story buried in this thread about the alternator http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/400578-w211-can-bus-problems.html

Granted this is a 642 engine but your experience will be similar.

Is this why-- the Voltage regulator (which seems to be what really fails-in most alternators) - is NOT listed as separate part on Pelican or other BIG parts sites???

or does the e320 cdi alternator design... NOT allow for removal/fix of JUST voltage regulator

NBuying a "rebuilt" ot "refurbished" alternator usually means new VR and if you're lucky new bearings. The voltage regulator on a 211 can be replaced on its own. It bolts onto the back of the alternator just like every other MB alternator. The only difference is that it lacks the D+ Terminator. It's digitally controlled by the car.

I don't know about the CDI but on a V6 gasser 211 you can replace the VR in under an hour. This includes dropping the alternator. Genuine Bosch VR is under $40 on AMZN and just about everywhere else. I've had one randomly fail on me (broken brush) so now I keep a spare in the trunk.

Is that VR in photo -- the Correct Part # for the e320 cdi?

Once again- VR's seem plentiful for ALL w211's ... when i search- But on parts/supply network-- they all say -- Does NOT fit e320cdi?

The VR is the same. Only difference is the plug is pointed in a different direction. Probably an access issue.
