Today i did the following:
- redid the valve adjustments
- checked COLD compression and the numbers are 290, 320, 320, 320
- Timed the IP again and made sure its on compression stroke.
- Checked for leaks across the governor

So what else can i do to resolve my high idle and smoke issue?
Thanks

Standard idle adjustment is at the throttle body. Look for a screw and lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw out. Under normal circumstances that will lower idle speed.

Have you checked the lengths of the control rods? There are specific lengths for the rod that goes from the throttle body to the relay lever, and the rod that goes down from the relay to back of the IP (lever on the governor housing).

Thanks for the quick reply.
- I fiddled with the screw and its at its lowest. Even if i take the screw and lock nut completely, there is no change.
- Yes, i checked the lengths of the rods as per the FSM. But will double check in the morning.
- Video of the engine starting and running, can see the high idle and smoke - https://youtu.be/efC09R-Rm40

Maybe a leaking poppet valve?
This will cause overfueling and result in white smoke.
Failly common for the seal to leak, especially if it dried out from lack of use.
See the attached thread for some tests to help in diagnosing the root cause(s).

Here is a link to the photo in post # 4 on the above thread.

On a general note, the RPM seems high.
I recently installed the IP on my 74's engine after having it refreshed and calibrated by a local Bosch shop I trust. I drip timed it to 24 degrees, and triple checked it to be sure. When I got it running it was blowing white smoke that smelled of unburnt fuel. It was missing and nailing much like what I see in the video you posted. I rotated the IP towards the engine to advance timing and that seems to have done the trick. I did it in four stages, and ended up about a quarter inch from the initial setting. Each step made a noticeable improvement.

Your results seem backwards, so I'm not quite sure what to think. Have you checked for a vacuum leak in the governor system (hose from throttle body, and the diaphragm)? A leak in the system will cause overfueling.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for all the advice.

This week, I gave up and wanted to sell the car, so put the engine back in and plumbed all the electrical, coolant and fuel lines. Same issue, starts and dies.

Then I started getting all the left over parts of the car together to pass it on to a new owner and I noticed that had another banjo bolt with spring and ball inside it, that looks like the one that is on the IP.

I decided to swap it for the one on the IP and did.

Then the sucker started and idled as if nothing has happened!!!

I pulled the engine out 3 years ago, refreshed it, and put all new perishable items and gaskets for no reason... All along it was this banjo bolt!!!

Pics attached.

Thank you for all the advice to date. One good thing is, I can now remove an engine, rebuilt it and put it back in the car! This experience is priceless.

But, there is a new issue. The transmission does not pull... The max i can do is 30MPH @ a lot of RPM... I will start a new thread for it.
