Strange engine noise

Hello while pulling an empty 5x8 enclosed trailer today which weighs about 900lbs. with my 85 300SD the engine was working hard to keep up a 65-70 mph. As I was driving on my 75 miles home I did not hear any strange engine noise but when I stopped about 5 miles from home to look at something while the engine was was running I heard a weird noise. I'm thinking its a valve tick or maybe a broken valve spring. I will try to post the vidio I made of it and maybe someone can help me figure out what is causing this noise. I tried for an hr. to upload my vidio with sound in the end it would not post it as it said a security token was not met what in the world is that? I was able to post the vidio on You Tube cannot seem to tranfer it here. https://youtu.be/6P0q0Gg6GpE I guess if you go to that link you can listen to the noise .

you can just post a link to your "vidio" because I don't know if it's possible to have an actual player in a forum post here

just seen your video and the noise sounds worrying.

If you want to find out which cylinder is making the sound you can try loosening up injector lines one by one and see at which cylinder the sound changes.

also you can take a look and see if you have missing/ sheared off bolts holding the crank pulley or a loose crank bolt

and check your oil level

I was able to copy the link. My guess is a valve out of adjustment or broken valve spring hope some of the experts will chime in I'm really bummed out with this noise. I did try to crack each injector to narrow down to a certain cylinder to no avail cannot pin down where its coming from gess next step would be to pull valve cover and check valve adj. I sure hope it did not blow a prechamber down into piston as I lost 1 engine already to that.

I believe I would first carefully adjust the valves, then run a lubro-moly diesel purge on it. Afterwards, replace both fuel filters and see what it sounds like.

If that didn't fix it, I would then pull the oil pan to see evidence of any ball bearings from the vacuum pump or any other metallic parts. Also, you could check for timing chain stretch.

Engine Noise

I'm subscribed to find out what it turns out to be .

There is another thread concerning this problem. Type in "engine knock" and the thread will come up. Something about the timing chain locked into the wrong indent.

I located it:

"The chain tensioner is supposed to ratchet out and lock into detents on it own. Well this brand new tensioner was stuck in the 1st detent, i guess oil pressure and the spring alone was not enough force to get it to pop into the second detent. I removed the cap and spring from the tensioner, turned the camshaft backwards to take up all the slack in the chain that was on the drivers side, so now the slack was on the tensioner side, then took a brass drift the same size as the piston of the tensioner and knocked the tensioner out in the second detent where it locked in tight. Reassembled everything, verified injection timing with AB light, was off 1 degree, so not a big deal. Drove vehicle and got it hot, noise resolved. All because that tensioner would pop out to the 2nd detent without a little extra force. Hopefully this will help someone in the future."

Like others have said, pull the valve cover and check the valves. It doesn't sound like a rod knock, so let's hope that is true. It sounds very consistent. A bad or "nailing" injector sounds different from my experience, and loosening the injector lines will prove that.

Thanks ROLLGUY I will pull valve cover and adjust and check valves

What exactly was new? The Housing, the Tensioner Spring and or the Plunger/shaft. Or of course was all of it new?

If the sound shows up at idle my advise is to listen with a Mechanics Stethoscope or piece of Broomstick handle or some use a large Screwdriver and identify where the sound came from.
What you did in post #4 was a good check.

If you remove the Valve Cover slowly turn the engine in the direction of normal rotation and inspect the length of the Timing Chain and the Cam Gear Teeth. Also see if the Timing Chain Guide on the Drivers side right on top is loose.

Ok 911 will take a close look at chain tension and cam gear teeth when I pull the valve cover. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to work on it today. Whatever it is it came on gradually as I thought I was hearing something at idle for some time was just thinking I was gonna pull all the injectors and have them cleaned and balanced or replace with new but the noise got worse before I could. I appreciate all the ideas will get on it tomorrow.

the information I posted was located on another found. Type in "engine knocking" in search and you'll see the thread.

As in all diagnostics, locating the source of the problem is simply going through the process of elimination. You might want to try a mechanic's stethoscope and place it on various locations of the valve cover and listen carefully.

I have known only a handful of master 617 diesel mechanics. Seems like most of the great ones have either retired or are dead.
