It's not as useful, and harder to wire. To measure amperage, you either need a gauge in series with the main power feed, or an inductive pickup. It would tell you how much load was on the system, and it would tell you whether the battery was charging or discharging. You can infer these things by the voltage reading, so having both gives you very little additional information.

IIRC, the hole diameter is 1", or maybe 26mm.

I suspected that wiring would be less than straightforward.

Thank you for helping me to dispense with my ignorance and add to my knowledge.

The battery light is very useful. If it is on, the alternator circuit is not working. If it flickers, the brush(es) is worn out. If it is off the alternator circuit is working but it doesn't tell you the alternator may be overcharging the battery. However, you can't expect a simple on off light to tell you everything. It is on every car, don't know about EV, so it is there for good reasons.

If it flickers, the brushes are worn out, OR, the alternator itself is bad.

Splitting hair?

Or the light bulb filament is flaky.
Or the armature wire is flaky.
Or loose connection.
Or loose ground strap

These are other possibilities, do I need to list more?
