1974 W115 240D Left over wiring after engine removal and installation

Gentlemen,

Most of you know that i removed, refreshed and repainted the engine bay just because of one fuel value issue.

Now, I buttoned up the engine and its looking cool and running fine. I left it to idle for an hour with intermittent short rides in my neighborhood without any heating or charging issues to date (fingers crossed).

Now, i have these three left over items i can't figure out. Any pointers?

Thank you.

First one looks like a ground strap. Probably from chassis to engine block. You should put that back on.

There was another strong ground strap that went from chassis to starter. This is too short for it (less than 6 inches).

Did you upgrade to pencil type glow plugs and internally regulated alternator?

Yes, I upgraded to pencil type glow plugs before this project started 3 years ago and they are awesome.

Not sure about the alternator, but i did not change it. It has 3 pin socket, but the pins are in a straight line.

This looks like the series glow plugs ground strap (that you don't need now).
The second thing is an external voltage regulator. Are you sure these were there on the engine and actually used before removal ?

I am not sure if they were attached to the car. But when i purchased the car as a non runner, there were few parts and extra IP in the boot. I wanted to check if they go anywhere, since the car is working fine for now.

The aluminium can has a part number. If no member identifies it. Phone a Mercedes dealer. Give them the part number that is visable and they can tell you what it is. Personally I do not have a clue. Nothing strange about that with me. Just ask the wife.

The wire with plugs did get my attention. Give it a little time as many members have owned your vintage of car. Other than that keep an eye open for anything not functioning.

I actually have a 1972 114 vintage gas coupe and another one that Fell through a concrete floor unfortunately. After I had done considerable work to it.

The first one is definitely the ground strap going from the alternator to the engine mount bracket next to it. Just did that job !

Thank you.

All are Bosch SEV EF/ER alternator parts.
An example of this style is the AR62401 in the photo below.

The short wire is the alternator ground strap.
The box in the second photo is an external voltage regulator.
The third photo is of the wire harness that attaches the voltage regulator to the alternator.

Thank you Alec, Barry and all of you.

I confirmed that the small strap belongs to the old glow plug system.
My alternator looks different to this picture, and so the PO may have upgraded it. So these parts are redundant. the Silver box is silver, beacuse i painted it when i was painting most of the engine parts. It has D+, D- and some other mark. So must be external regulator and the wire that goes with it. Mine looks like the attached pic.

Thank you all and we can close this thread.
