Quick Opinion General Altimax or Uniroyal Tiger Paw

My 1991 300d needs tires, and I’m largely inclined to the Altimax RT 43, but my tire guy suggested the Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring AS. I’m not on a shoestring budget with this virus stuff, but money is tight and the Uniroyals are cheaper (by $65). Which would y’all choose?

Was a Michelin only guy for decades. Due to a warranty issue decided to try the RT43's on two cars, the third is in the near future. I'm thrilled with the RT43's on my '91 124 TE.

Good luck!!!

I've got General Altimax RT43's on my 91 and they're great. No complaints at all. Excellent quality tire at a very fair price.

I've been very happy with Uniroyal Tiger Paws on my 1980 300SD.

I had Tiger Paws on our E320. They worked out well. Lasted longer than the previous Dunlops and Michelins.

By the way, there are several different Tiger Paw versions with quite a bit of price variability. I think we had the Tiger Paw Touring A/S.

I've got Altimax on a couple of cars without issue. They seem to stay balanced. I don't have long time wear data but think they're supposed to be good for 60,000 mi or so. Ask your phone as DuckDuckGo has the information.

The $100 Michelins get poor reviews, the $75 Generals get top reviews.

I have Generals on three cars and I am not babying them, I push pretty hard cornering (compared to most zombie drivers). No complaints given the overall limitations of the car.

Had a couple go bad due to alignment issues, one car is stock spec and the other is way below stock spec on toe in order to stop the shoulder wear. I dont think any of that is the tire.

I also run close to max pressure (40/44) on recommendation of my suspension shop. Again, no complaints, better performance, not concerned with a dishrag-type soft ride.

I just upgraded to 15" tires/wheels and went with the General Altimax RT43's based on reports from this forum
and from Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports has the RT43's at the very top of their list with a rating of 70
while the Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring was is way down on the list with a rating of 58.
For my tire size, the General tires are cheaper than the Uniroyals.

I went with the Altimax. General had a $50 rebate on the tires so the price was practically the same as the Uniroyal.

My 2001 TDI Golf is on its second set of Altimax. The first set went 50k miles. With minimal rotation of the tires, they wore as close to perfect as any tires I've owned. But a MkIV Golf is not a w124 (I was concerned they'd be too soft)... so I appreciate the advice!

i got 5 General altimax installed by Sears on my 82 300d a few years ago for around 450 bucks total if I recall. I love them, and they look good too.
