It can do it, it’s not like I DD it that way. It’s a great carto drive at 25-45, but sometimes you have to be on the highway a bit to get there.

Post W123 240D Crusing Speed

Some simply don't care that they're spinning the engine far faster than prudent .

I have traveled America in my '82 240D with slush box and I rarely go over 60 ~ 65 MPH, if I need to go faster I'll get another vehicle rather than foolishly force the one at had beyond it's design parameters .

I certainly do care, and 65 is my typical max, only when necessary.

The car gets maybe 150 miles a year at 65 mph. Something tells me it won’t die of too much time over speed.

There’s a reason why I have a 300cd, and a 350sd, amongst a bunch of other vehicles...

Post Lack Of Use

Oddly enough, I prefer this 240D for long distance traveling .

I like to sight see and stop a lot too .

The older I get the slower I go, I imagine that's a good thing .

enough to make a nice difference at higher RPM, eg: 4000rpm becomes 3760rpm

however, it's not too much of a change to make the lower speeds still doable, expecially in a manual
Have you done this modification? How does it drive at city speeds?

I enjoy it in slower roads, essentially state highways vs interstates. Mine is pretty low mileage, but it’s so smooth and dare I say, peppy (willing?) in the 25-45 band, and even at 55 isn’t that raucous.

Post Actual Speeds & Driving

In you're where it's flat, say Nebraska, and have a stick shift, and drive alone with an empty trunk, changing the final drive makes very good sense .

Otherwise give it careful thought because like adding a turbo charger, it's only going to work out well for a very few people .

Just because you can do a thing doesn't automatically make it wise .

Mercedes put a lot of testing into the design of these cars, they were to most popular taxi in the world for good reason .

.
I live in London where it's flat, have a stick shift, drive with my wife who weighs nothing, with nothing in the trunk. Sounds like it makes sense for me, even though it's a 80% urban/ 20% highway kinda car. I was really hoping I could find a solution to the ultra high rpms at 70 mph + the fuel economy ceiling at higher highway speeds. This sounds like it may work for me.

Sounds O.K. to me .

You won't necessarily get any greater fuel economy living in London though....

I'd think a 5 speed box would suit you better .
