Starting up 1974 240D OM616 in an engine stand
Hi all -- I’ve got an OM616 out of a ‘74 240D I’d like to try and get started on the ground before swapping in to my '76 206D van. It’s got the loop style series-wired glow plugs, and it seems like I might need an additional resistor before I connect the glow plugs up to +12V. Is this true? Worried about burning out the glow plugs without the additional resistor. I wasn't able to pull the gorilla knob or indicator light (what people seem to call the "salt shaker") from the donor car, but I do have them in the 206D that I'll installing the engine in. It previously had an OM615 with the same pneumatically governed IP and loop-style glow plugs.
I’ll also need to pull on the starting arm on the IP while cranking the starter -- maybe just by hand, ha! Anybody done this before? |

Dont over think it just get it all rigged up and fire it on.
And ya ur supposed to have some sort of relay or something between the battery. But if it were me I wouldn't worry about it and just give it a shot strait to the battery. As for the starting arm are u talking about the fuel shut off valve? Hit it with your hand air pump or if it's not a vacuum in that model a piece of wire or something. Just kick it on and figure it out as u go
