OM617 Head locating pin in oil duct

Hey there, my friend is putting an Om617 into his truck and he bought a partially assembled long block for it.

Trouble is he goes to put the timing chain tensioner in and it wont go in because huge surprise, the previous assembler put the little metal locating dowel for the head in the wrong slot. I think its in the bottom oil duct from the head to the tensioner. It definitely sticking out of it either way.

I think I can help him remove it so he can get the tensioner in, but my question is, if that's the only incorrect piece of this motor, should it be alright without that front pin?

If the head is already on it will probably be fine as the other pin and bolts will align the gasket. I'd be comfortable trying it.

Good luck!!!

Actually upon closer inspection I believe its in the right slot, but it isn't at the right depth. Perhaps is was in the head when they put it together? the block is its seat, but it could totally pass through the hole in the head.
