85TD removal - windshield, drip rail and rear quarter glass
I'm getting the 85TD ready for the body shop to do minor rust repair.
This 123 FSM doesn't include everything on the 123 body. 300D Repair Manual The windshield gasket is brittle, cracked and leaking. How does the windshield come out? What's the technique to remove the chrome trim on the drip rail without bending it? How does the rear quarter glass come out? Also need to remove the tailgate rear glass.

I would recommend that you have a professional remove the glass. Breaking both the windshield and the rear hatch glass can be costly. I would also source both a new windshield rubber and a new rear hatch rubber before proceeding. You may find that the rear hatch glass rubber is no longer available.

X2 on above from Bwhitmore and, confirm that any pro you pick has done these before. You don't want to be their first rodeo or your moldings will be pretzeled.
If you have the time and patience you can cut the moldings out using very sharp fresh utility blades. Do not pull them at all, cut them out so they don't bend. Don't drop them they are soft and scratch easily. The moldings are T shaped and lock the gasket in place. The moldings have to be installed in the gaskets before the glass and gasket are strung into place. Good luck!!!

I understand about the front and rear glass. I'll drive the car to the shop and either cut the glass out or have a glass man do it.
It is the quarter glass and drip rail trim that I'm concerned about. I don't want to bend that either. Youtube etal has been useless for the TD.

My recall is that the 1/4 glass molding has one screw by the rear doors and is held into the gasket by friction in a groove. The 1/4 window gasket is rather stout. It is the same concept as the windshield, glass sits in a groove, a groove overlaps the sheet metal of the 1/4 panel. I think you may be able to lift the gasket from the inside over the lip and take it out.
The drip rails are friction fit, could be tapped off with a hardwood insulator and mallet. Might be better off leaving the drip rails on...your call...good luck!!!

The drip rails have to come out because the PO let leaves get caught in the back of the drip rail and rust where the rear sunroof drains exit.
They also paid some incompetent to replace the sunroof seals with non-OE seals and couldn't figure out why the floor boards were wet. I've removed the carpet and determined that the windshield gasket leaks. The sunroof drains are now clear and working and new MBZ seals are installed. I only need to make sure that new seals are available, be able to have the shop easily remove the quarter window and take the trim off to access where the rear drains exit the car.

The 1/4 window seals might be able to be reused if NLA, they are robust as I mentioned earlier.
Sounds like you are really making it nice. Post some pics when you can.

I found another little bit of rust directly behind the rear chrome on the wheel well. The metal behind the chrome appears solid and I can't find any softness when poking around with a screwdriver.
Rust appears to be caused by leaking rear windshield seal. Should I consider pulling the chrome around the wheel well as preventive measures? |

Yes, pull it if you can. Curious...are you doing a full repaint?
Good luck!!!

Not doing a full repaint on this one, just fixing the mechanicals including AC, stopping water leaks and repairing rust. I want it reasonably attractive, functional and comfortable.
The 85SD is getting paint now and I have a 78 Datsun Z that I'd like to turbo and repaint. It also has rust but is worth more so I'm willing to spend more on It. I'm hoping to be able to get rid of a couple of vehicles son's 08 Prius when he goes to school, 84SD that needs more than I have time for even though much has been done, 2015 Volvo V60 when it is out of warranty in a few years. Would like to add an air cooled 911 and a shop with a lift before I'm too old for it to matter.
