Meyle Expansion tank sprung a leak in just 3 years!

I noticed some dripping under my car today. Turns out the expansion tank that I had just replaced 3 years ago almost to the day, had a pinhole leak in it. I think the tank we took out prior to that was the original tank, then nearly 27 years old and the only reason it broke was because the thermostat broke causing the car to overheat which cracked the expansion tank. And the Meyle tank only lasted 3??? Are Meyle's made in China now or what? I've always thought they were a respected brand name.

Is Behr brand any better?

My original tanks leaked 2 months ago. I my case I opted to fixit with a woven polyester cloth and JB Weld Epoxy which would likely work well on a pin hole.

When I looked I saw that for my 84 300D Pelican sells the genuine Mercedes Coolant Recovery tank for $36 plus what ever the shipping is. Not an exorbitant price.

Anyway the epoxy and cloth would patch the pin hole till you get a new tank.

And God only knows where Meyle parts are made. The packages their stuff comes in often had Meyle Germany but then will have other tags or stickers saying made in China or ?

The expansion tank is pressurized no more than the cap's rating which is about 20psi. It is unlikely 20psi will crack the tank. Check your cap first and make sure it is opening properly at the right spec.

As cheap as genuine expansion tanks are, you're not saving much by going aftermarket.

Would have taken 6 weeks to get one in from Germany for $200+ or I could have gone with an aftermarket for $50 and had it in 3 days.

You must not have a W123 or early W126 with the common bottle shape. My OEM tank was something closer to $50 3 years ago.

I buy my parts at Keyes in Southern California. They are cheaper than the Classic Center.

I ordered some parts from mboemparts in Naperville, IL and received notice that they are short handed because of the virus and shipping is delayed.

Back in April, they were outright cancelling orders for that reason. I called ahead of time last time I placed an order with them and told them I was willing to wait. My parts shipped out about a week after I placed the order.
