Bittersweet update:

After discussion with my GF and some offers from Members here, I decided to sell it.
It was towed to its new home where the Mechanic will try to revive her!
End of an era for me, and hopefully the issue is resolved and she will live on!

I have to say, this was very entertaining to read. I hope someone takes it off your hands. I hate for good things to die.

The post right above yours said it all. The mechanic (a friend of mine) is a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast, and will probably do what it takes to put the car back on the road.

Is lift pump failure a common issue on these? Or is it something to be concerned about on all old diesels as they age even further.

- Peter.

I have not heard of one going bad enough to dump fuel into the lube oil. Yes lift pumps go bad, as in they don't pump anymore, or at least not enough to allow the engine to run.
