The headgasket was probably leaking when you got it and you finished it off by abusing it that hard. I think something similar happened to mine, It didn't even ever get over halfway to the mark before the red but after a long grade on a hot day I think the head gasket started leaking. It's going to be at least $1500 of tools, "while I'm in there" stuff and tools not counting the new head to fix but I probably will anyway. For a cheap car like that maybe just put a new head gasket in it? The head gasket kit isn't that expensive.

Well I bought the car mainly to have a pump core for a om606 conversion. I can find another $hitty sdl to buy for 1500 bucks and a hell of a lot less work. Really hoping that e300 om606 motor will pop up In a junkyard and I'll get it before somebody else.

Good info to rule out a plugged cat.

Don't know much about this particular engine, but in general EGR systems lower combustion temps by quite a bit, in order to reduce creation of NOx. If the cooling system has any deficiencies, increasing combustion temps is probably a bad idea.

Definitely wouldn't recommend it.

If there's no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil, no coolant smell in the exhaust, and you're not loosing coolant, doesn't sound like you have a bad head gasket. (Not yet anyway, don't keep beating it, lol.)

When was the last time the cap on the coolant reservoir was replaced?

Well thanks for the response I guess. Are you a uro representative or what? Kind of strange, ive never seen a response like this.

So the EGR was already defeated by a PO, It had a BB in the vacuum hose so it was inoperable. I just blocked it off to the intake and used the manifold port for my egt temp sensor. I don't believe that EGR is going to help your engine in any way either. Exhaust in the air is a crutch for emissions.

You prefaced your response that you don't know my particular engine then go on to "not reccomend" a head retorque. Where are you gathering that from?

As far as my radiator cap, are you insinuating that the rad cap is magically pressurizing the cooling system after the thermal expansion of the coolant has ceased and the cooling system is at ambient pressure? Even if you had a pipe plug installed and fully sealed your cooling system at ambient temp, after cooling it would be back to ambient and un pressurized.
