Nothing would be owed to California for registration.

I should explain unique set of circumstances.

Car has Jan 2020 registration date...

owner passed away

Family donated it to foundation....

Foundation is going to sell it to me...

IS-- Foundation is on line for the Reg/fees-- from date Jan 2020- to the date they took title? OR???

Hopefully the family of the owner filed for a certificate of non operation. If a certificate was issued no fees are due to the state of California. If fees are due they are the responsibility of the foundation, but, they may try to pass them on to you.

It’s pretty common here in California For people to not pay the tags for years and then just sell the car out of state for a full price. I wish they would crack down on it. It raises the registration cost for people that actually pay

The current California owner (the "foundation"?) should sign over the title to you. If your destination state in the Midwest requires only a signed over, released title to initiate their process, then the State of California is no longer in the process, and you owe nothing to CA. Check with your destination state as to documents required to obtain a new title there.

Foundation- just informed me that they brought the registration current...
But they will NOT get Title for 4-6 weeks, due to paperwork/transfer?

How does that work for me? I will check with My state Illinois DMV thursday

But can i transport that on truck without title? Doesn't that put me in a very risky spot... not having a title in hand?

The foundation isn't going to rip you off. In TN, won't be able to license the car without a title but can posess, ship etc.

There was a really nice Datsun Z that a dealership had done a lot of work on. The owner bailed and for whatever reason wouldn't/couldn't supply a title. The dealership parted the car.

Check with your state on what the local laws are.

The foundation should provide you with the receipts from the CA DMV; they will establish that the process of re-titling is in progress. The foundation could also give you a signed statement (perhaps notarized) stating that you have purchased the vehicle from them.

God dang California fricken sucks for Registration wow! I can only imagine how happy a Californiaian would be if they move up to Washington. It's sooo easy in Washington now.

But ya you just need to get proof that the title is actually coming from them. Especially with estate stuff and California you need to make sure they are actually getting the title.

If you get some sort of proof it's coming you could take the risk. But I've been stuck with a few cars that they says "the title is coming" and it never came.

It is precisely for these types of situations that California has - at least used to have - bill of sale forms.
