SBC: Actuation Count Reset on Newer Units
There's a thread over on Benzworld by a guy who got a C249F code, took it to the dealer under the extended SBC warranty, and all they did was reset the counter (presumably not to zerio). I know that some earlier SBC units had an unnecessarily low threshold (400k I think it was) but the later units had a threshold of 600k. Well, this guy has a 2006 CDI. It surprises me that, with a model year that recent, they wouldn't simply replace the pump.

I thought only the early 05s were affected but mine goes into the dealer today to have the counter and all the other updates reflashed. My build date was 04 2005.

FWIW, the dealer doesn't have any discretion concerning which SBC repair is carried out. They simply check the system using SDS and follow the prompts, documenting each step. Sometimes the result is replacement of the entire hydraulic unit, other times it's a software update....

Ok $89 later I have a clean car and diagnosed with code C249F estimated cost of repair $3983.70. They have contacted MB Canada to determine how much they will assist.
On a side note the count had already been reset or messed with before and I'm guessing when I tried to reset the count with my Foxwell it came back with code 40 not able to complete task so I guess that's the reason? |
Pretty sure thats supposed to be fully warrantied, so the cost should be $0, not even the $89 you already paid. They are supposed to diagnose and replace the SBC for 20 years at no cost.
That code means "Brake By Wire System at end of service life" |

When I had a White warning come, the dealership change the unit changed, got a loaner and a washed car.

The SBC issue has obviously been taken seriously by MB, which explains the extended warranty. I work at an extremely high-volume dealership and I can count on one hand (maybe two) the number of vehicles that have come in with total SBC failure, so I’d bet the engineers have figured out the criteria for replacement vs. repair...... |
I was just confirmed to receive a new SBC brake unit and brake pedal switch. I'm not certain why they made me wait since last Friday morning. Actually yesterday I was getting impatient so I called MB Canada customer service and the rep. was totally up to date with the warranty and assured me since my counter had been reset once before now they need to replace it for free. Holy ever nice I'm tickled pink, parts arrive Aug 4.

Nice!
