'95 E300D Fuel Tank Hoses
I'm about to change the fuel tank screen on my '95 E300D. I wanted to replace at the same time the two flexible hoses coming out the bottom of the tank leading to the metal lines to and from the engine. Are the two lines identical? On quick view they appear to be but I have not been able to find a listing for the return hose to confirm.
The pickup hose is 116-470-14-75-MBZ at Pelican. Do I just order two? |

‘95 E300D Fuel Tank Hoses
Dieselbenz1: PM. No issues with operations but at 140K miles I thought it time to do, if just to see what’s in the bottom of the tank. I have to pull the intake hose off to get the screen out so figured I’d change both.
I do some long distance driving and am just trying to eliminate breakdown issues that might occur far away from home base. I already changed all the fuel lines in the engine compartment last year so this will finish the fuel system lines. Now I have to figure out what to do about the injectors—they’re also due for a service and I’ll probably send them out for reconditioning and nozzles but need to do some research there. |

Just checked with Pelican Parts order desk regarding the return line for my '95 E300D. They show a part number for the flexible hose running to the engine, but no entry at all for the return hose. While I was under the car yesterday scoping out the R&R, it appeared to me that the return line also had a threaded fitting into the tank. Pelican suggested it may be a bulk hose, i.e. without fitting, but also said nothing was shown on the MB page even indicating there was any return line at all.
If anyone has changed these hoses on their 124.131, would you please let me know if the return hose threads into the tank or if it is simply clamped onto a nipple in the bottom of the tank. |

I had sent a link but guess it was too specific.
"freescruz.com/.priv/W124/Main.html" Doesn't list the part numbers but has a fairly decent picture of what it looks like, (standard hose?). When stranded away from home with a clogged in tank filter reversing the supply and return will get you moving again you may need more than half a tank I think.

Is this what the bottom of your tank looks like?

I did a little investigation in ISPPI and for some reason, the return rubber hose is greyed out on the diagram. On the older W124 300D, the return rubber hose is there and the E300D 124.131 is not listed as an applicable vehicle. It seems to suggest the E300D doesn't have a rubber return hose, but you claim to see it. Nevertheless, the part number for the older W124 with the rubber return hose is 124-476-03-26. Pictures of your tank would help.

dieselbenz1: I just accessed the URL you sent and, indeed, that looks more like what I'm seeing under the car. The photo, when I get it, will tell the story.

dieselbenz1: And if that illustration is correct for my car, then it appears the hose does not have a fitting on the end, but merely slides onto a nipple and is held in place with a clamp. I have to get under there and clean things up a bit to get a better view. So no part number, just a length of hose. Thanks for pointing that illustration out. None of the other sites that offered a fuel tank illustration showed any hose coming out of the bottom of the tank.

Hose Question Resolved
Hose question resolved. Looking at the bottom of the tank again tonight, after giving the hose a good wipe, I can see that what I thought was a fitting up at the top is actually a metal clamp. The return hose is apparently attached to a short, straight nipple that extends downward from the tank. It's probably not as long or curved as the nipple in the picture H-townbenzoboy provided; I'm not sure I could easily slide the hose on that far and around the curve. Nonetheless, the curve looks similar in his photo and this one.
So a length of bulk fuel line is all that is called for--let the screen replacement begin...The feed hose with the fitting has been ordered from Peach Parts. The screen is already here. Thanks to all for your insights and assistance. I really didn't want to start the job only to find out I didn't have a necessary part. |

I think the o-ring comes with the tank screen. At least mine did.
