New sunroof seal way too big
 

I ordered a sunroof seal for my W124. It's not a MB but one from Turkey which should be fine. I try to put it in and .... it seems like it's 6 to 10 inches too long.

Thinking maybe I was sent one from a W126, I ordered another one from a different vendor, seal also made in Turkey and...same thing. Too long.

I doubt I'm putting this in wrong. I simply pull the old one out and stuff the new one in. Has anyone else had this problem with a non MB seal? I could see if it was off by 1/4" but off by this much?? I'm thinking if I got an original MB seal that it might be the same length. I doubt the manufacturers in Turkey want any sales cancellations and returns.

I just cut them to length

It's probably long enough to do any sunroof that works with that profile seal.

This is a good reason to stick with genuine MB when it comes to rubber. The list price is over $160 for this particular seal, but you can shop around and get it for less. As I've gotten older, I've realized the time saved with a proper fit the first time is worth paying extra.

Did you have any leaks when you cut it?
 

Did you have to use a rubber joiner glue of any kind when you cut it to length?

Window seals and sun roof seals are completely different animals.

We got a set of W123 sun roof seals from Turkey which are complete crap. Wrong size (too long) and don't fit the track. The rubber has begun to deteriorate ALREADY despite using Gummi Pflege Stift. Not worth the hassle of returning them so am going to live with them until we find decent replacements.

I've used some of the Turkey supplier's other items and they are hit or miss with their quality.

The takeaway here appears to be that the seals are turkeys.

I once bought URO front seal for W123 sunroof. Body shop was doing rust repair around sunroof. They could not make the seal fit. They asked me to do it! I couldn't make it fit either.
I advised vendor - he sent me a proper MB seal at no extra cost and URO went into trash! (Randy or Rusty, I forget, but no longer around)
MB seal went on with no problems.

I took a genuine seal yesterday from junkyard for $5 and it fits perfectly. No binding, size is perfect and it is a closed loop

Hi Graham, just to confirm, which part number seal was that? 108 782 0098 ? Our engineers were reviewing 108 782 0098 about eight months ago, will find out the status.

We did have an issue with Sunroof Seal 126 780 0098 (for W126 metal sunroofs) being too long a while back, it but was resolved in late 2019. Production runs since have been checked and are the correct length.

I no longer have the records. But it was the front sunroof seal for a 1985 Mercedes 300D - bought in 2009 or 2010. Looked like the one you linked.

We've been selling sunroof seal 108 782 0098 (which was a commodity part and the exact same seal sold by some of our competitors) from 2010 until early 2020.

A few years ago, we began developing our own seal 108 782 0098 in order to improve the quality and fit (and so we wouldn't be selling the same seal as our competitors). The redesigned seal was a running change, and we've been providing the new version since around June of 2020. Haven't received any feedback on the new URO Parts version seal just yet, but we're certainly looking forward to it.

All I can say, is that the URO seal I bought back then was a VERY bad product. So bad that I would have defied anybody to install it. It was just simple wrong in every way. You could not have sold it for 10 years - every one would have been returned.

I appreciate that you are here trying to defend your company, and hopefully improve your products. But, please don't try and tell me that the product was good enough to sell for 10 years. A professional body shop could not install that seal and nor could I. If you would like to try yourself, send me $50 to cover expenses and I will return it to you. (I checked in my junk pile, and I found I still had that discarded seal.)
