Mercedes Bluetec Settlement

We have a 2009 ML320 Bluetec in the household, which we LOVE.
So, this breaking news is of great interest...

Thoughts, opinions, more info?

What modification is approved and the effect of said modification? The cheating originally was driven by too much carbon buildup more than any other factor. At least in Volkswagons case I have a strong suspicion.

Depending on vehicle the fix involves anything from just a software update (many sprinters) to full exhaust system replacement (Some E class, GLK, GL, ML etc)

Interesting.
Why will they be replacing the exhaust systems on some models?
Is the DPF part of that?

Wow, THANKS!

For our 2009 ML, looks like:
Software Update
New copper catalyst, DOC, DPF
New NOx sensor
New ECU
New coolant thermostat (existing part A6422001915)

What is the DOC?
Does that basically mean they will replace the complete exhaust system?

Kinda frustrating cos after a few NOX errors, which cured themselves, I have a brand new MB NOX sensor in a box... $350

MB has two years to complete the improvements to 85% of the vehicles (three for sprinters)....so its likely gonna be a while before parts are available in sufficient quantity.

I haven't heard anything. I did see on a site somewhere that the court wasn't "satisfied" with the settlement so it was still under review....

There's a clause in the settlement that specifies even greater owner compensation beyond the already determined amount if the fix reduces vehicle performance or efficiency from what it was when originally sold.

we roll around deleting our egr systems on like every single one of the diesel vehicles we own but we are mad at them and want settlement for doing the same thing??

Deleting the EGR on an old diesel makes hardly any difference in its emissions or operations. Deleting the system off a current diesel would make a massive difference.

The modern engines with extreme injection pressures also generate far smaller soot particulates than the old engines, which are much more dangerous when breathed in (and stay suspended in the air much longer).

I am neutral on the subject, they should not have been shady trying to hide/alter emissions, but the gov forcing a massive campaign of exhaust system replacements isn't exactly going to help the environment either. Think of the raw materials/shipping/travel/recycling involved in replacing the exhaust on tens of thousands of vehicles.
