“Automaker Daimler AG and subsidiary Mercedes-Benz USA have agreed to pay $1.5 billion to the U.S. government and California state regulators to resolve allegations they cheated on emissions tests, officials said Monday.”

A lot of money certainly. Yet not enough to do any permanent damage to the company. Mercedes total losses would be a lot more than this overall.


About the same result with Volkswagon. Who really got clobbered To the tune of 38 billion overall. Well that is their estimate. Yet if you look at their dollar volume per year it is bearable.

Yeah. It was a slap on the nose but one wonders what refit and buyback costs could be.

No buyback, if I understand correctly.

On my GLK it looks like I get essentially a full exhaust system replacement + looong warranty on said components. Awesomenessss. :D

This will be the car's second exhaust system.....

Other than the dpf and two nox sensors its been completely reliable....including the adblue system, no errors or issues at all. Just crossed 90,000 miles a few days ago.

Ask them for the old exhaust system they remove. Worth trying in my opinion. Depends if they are told to throw those removed away or not.

Interesting! And no. you won't get the old system back. They will go back to M-B to be held in case there are any follow-up lawsuits and to prove compliance with this one. It is enough fine to get their attention but not enough to put them out of business - EPA structures fines in part to have these effects.

Yeah with this stuff they usually take back the old one (if anything, for rebuilding or updating) + recycling/proving that was completed.

Meanwhile semis merrily go belching forth across the North American continent where one truck has the polluting footprint of half the entire "cheating" cars fleet.

Imagine the emissions that will be created producing tens of thousands of components for those exhaust system replacements, recycling the old, and shipping all that stuff (on massive polluting container ships).

I wonder how many forests were cleared to make all the paper used in the lawsuits....

Its all a vicious circle with no real success in actually eliminating any emissions.

It must be fun making up your own imaginary statistics about emissions to deflect from the fact that Mercedes Benz broke our laws, lied and cheated on order to make more profits selling us dirty cars.

I'd say no more fun than living in an imaginary world where you can scream 'cheater, cheater, cheater' at Mercedes in every possible thread for creative interpretations of the clean-air act and at the exact same time author and post tutorials complete with pictures that show people how to disable EGR systems in Mercedes vehicles.

it's the war on cars. Passenger diesels imports are the target.

GM has been lying about their cars for years, gets a pass.

They don't care about the environment, it's about control, eg. 5G is not for making your internet faster. There is more money in making things not work than by making things work

Can't find any links, just google selling propaganda

I do know vw tdi fuel economy was always rated LOWER than reality, and GM fuel economy was rated HIGHER that reality - basically helping GM sell cars over VW by lying to the people. GM couldn't compete so they just lied. People still loved the TDI's so they got the government to railroad VW with the "emission scandal". Meanwhile, GM got free money to stay in business and never improved any of their designs. Probably just hitting up mercedes for easy extortion after what they did to VW.

My dad bought a 2012 equinox that claimed to get 30mpg and it NEVER gets that. The real emission scandal is that most people driving cars that still get around 20mpg because that is what is sold to them. Junkyards are overflowing with them.
