What a difference! Synthetic drivetrain fluids

My 84 W123 300D (non-turbo) Automatic has had a recent ATF and differential fluid change. Today, around 10K miles later, I decided to switch to the following fluids:

1) Amsoil Signature ATF in the 722.4 transmission
2) Liqui Moly synthetic hypoid GL5 75 90 fluid in the rear differential
3) Febi Bilstein "yellow" power steering fluid

For an unknown reason, the rear differential fluid came out grey, mucky and opaque. After the switch, an annoying low speed (25 mph) recurring grinding noise from the rear has totally disappeared.

While the steering feels no different, the gear shifts are noticeably smoother under harder acceleration and the car is noticeably quieter. I was not expecting to notice a difference with such a simple change but I was proven wrong. If I notice any other changes, I'll post back in this thread.

I have a weird noise in om603 only when pressing throttle, regardless of speed. It sounds like dragging a chain on concrete floor.
It changes its pitch a bit with speed, but whenever I let go of throttle, it goes away. Crankshaft bearing or something?? Flex discs and half axles are good, as well as all wheel bearings and center support bearing.

Recommend starting a thread to ask for help. My "noise" remained without throttle as well. This is why I suspected the prop/drive shaft or differential. It sounds like your issue may be more sinister.

Maybe, but I had a specialist look over the car, even we put it on the lift and I floored it, and he couldn't find anything wrong. He said to disregard the noise, as everything works and behaves in order. It may come up later. I've done over 5000 miles like that without issues, so I don't really want to open up a pandora box. Just thought someone might know, when we are talking about noises.

Thanks for sharing your findings, I am switching to a synthetic ATF soon. Just curious: Why did you choose Amsoil over others?

Three reasons really:

1) I asked the question to existing owners and overwhelmingly positive feedback for Amsoil and Redline ATFs made them the two best choices.

2) In every test/ review I've seen/ read over the past 15 years, Amsoil's products always bests the products they are tested against. This includes brands from large conglomerates like Mobil 1 etc. Here's a great example

3) Probably the weakest reason for many here but these days, when everything is made in China, often leading to negative consequences, it's rarer to find an American made product that genuinely outperforms. No, I'm not an American and I don't live in the States anymore but I like my money to reward innovation (vs. imitation) and Amsoil has always exemplified this.

Here's a tip - use Auto-RX precisely as instructed in your motor, transmission, differential and power steering before you swap the oil. Worked wonders on 5 of my vehicles by rejuvenating internal rubber seals and gently cleaning metal internals so that components are in their best possible condition prior to receiving the new fluids.

Thanks Screwdriva, you've made my fluid purchase decision quite easy. I have reasons to believe my engine needs some cleaning, so I'll look into AutoRX too.
