The flasher in the car seems to be working fine. It's a BGE 601.359, with three contacts. Peli-parts lists a four contact flasher with a different part number for this machine, but I don't think it would fit? This part number seems to be unobtainable, but it should be trivial to adapt a generic three-port flasher relay.

Flashers & More

Ah, HA ! Alaska, whodathunk it ? .

Are you using the factory supplied block heater on the right rear of the engine block ? .

New cords are available affordably, someone here gave me the brand and part number I ordered in two, one for each W123 .

Sometimes you can open those fancy German flashers and clean the contacts with good quality hard paper, NEVER use crocus cloth / sandpaper .

I bet someone here has one of those flashers lying in a junk box .

EDIT : THANK YOU for the picture of the reverse lamp switch ! I have the center console open on my 240D with automatic and was wondering what the two lead female plug was for, it's for the manual tranny's switch, now I can relax , nothing gone missing .

nelstomlinson 09-14-2022 09:56 PM

Yes, it seems to be the factory block heater. The cord may be original, but it's in good shape, no serious deterioration of the insulation.

Paper is amazingly abrasive. It's not hard to imagine that just plain paper would cut the corrosion off the contacts.

Paper was also used often the clean the heads of video tape machines back when .

I like Bosch or NGK glows.

Lovely 240s !

The car has developed an occasional squeal when I depress the clutch, it will sometimes continue for a few seconds after I let up the pedal. I have another project in the shop, so the MB is side lined for a while, until I can get it into the warm to take a look at it.

I'm guessing it's the throwout bearing.

Squeaky T.O. Bearing

It certainly sounds like it .

As long as it doesn't make rattling sounds you can probably let it ride a while .

Spring is coming, maybe it'll last until then ~ no fun doing a clutch job in the cold & wet .

My 2001 Ford Ranger Trucklet's T.O. Brg. makes a squeal as I let it out under certain load conditions .

It's dead silent at all other times so I'm not worried yet .

If ever the T.O. begins to whir or squeak when you're waiting for a traffic signal with the clutch depressed, you have impending doom .

nelstomlinson 01-12-2024 07:38 PM

Oh, I'll move it into the shop to work on it. First I have to get one of my truck engines back together and back in the truck, then we have minor surgery planned for a couple subies, then the new ambulance goes in for a checkup...then the Mercedes clutch.

It'll probably be spring before I get to it. We have other rigs running for now.

Too Many Jobs

Sounds like me .

I have too many down vehicles .

nelstomlinson 04-07-2024 06:02 PM

I'm going to start on that clutch project today, probably have to finish next weekend. I'll document it here.

Iam the opposite of you.
2 ford IDI`s and 9 Mercedes

240`s will run forever if taken care of.
A simple basic car.
They have the best AC/Heat system, manual DIY.
Zero - 60 eventually

The trucks are a necessity for me, and the Mercedes is a luxury. It's interesting that they get about the same ton-miles/gallon. The Mercedes weighs about half what the trucks weigh, and gets about twice the miles per gallon.

I guess it's not surprising, since they use the same IDI tech, and diesels inject just enough fuel to do the job, so it doesn't matter that the truck weighs twice as much, but has three times the engine displacement.

Catching up to you, just added another family member to
the Ford fleet. Bought a 87 F-250, 4 X 4, C-6, ATS Turbo,
Extra Cab, 121K miles for $2K.

The 86 6.9 getting around 18 mpg now but in the summers
usually 20+ T-19 & 3:55 Diff. running empty.

The 80 240D 4-spd with the 3:58 Diff, 33 on the Hwy.
The 85 300D 4-spd, 2:88 Diff getting around 30MPG

The old beast is running well, and I'm driving it regularly. I should probably check valve lash again soon. I'm using Lubrimoly 5w-40 oil in it.

I just found some Morimoto LED sealed beam headlight replacements, sold by Holley as "Retrobright." I put'em in, and I like'em! they're brighter than stock, with slightly better cutoff.

These aren't as bright nor as tight a cutoff as the LED projectors I have in my van, but they're good.

Nobody blinks their brights at me when I have my low beams on, but they'll definitely blink their brights at me when I have the high beams on.

Low beam or high beams, there's enough light in both ditches far enough out that I have a chance to see a moose. I'm wishing I'd gotten the yellower color instead of the cool white, I think that would show moose a little more clearly.

Did an oil change, and the car wouldn't shut off. The red lever on top of the engine wouldn't shut it off either, so I assumed it wasn't vacuum related. WRONG!

The vacuum shutoff valve is located low on the back of the injection pump, below and obscured by a white vacuum thingy. The thread where folks led me through finding it is here.

Still daily driving it, it's still running great, and now it even stops running again.
