1991 300D Turbo

Hi,

Is a turbo from a 1991 350 SDL a bolt on replacement for turbo from a 1991 2.5 300D? I have access to one for a car I am looking at trading for.

Thanks!

Best advice would be read what's written on the 2.5 turbo.
AFAIK there were two types; Garret and KKK.
I believe you could make it work, the difference may be in exhaust length.

I beleive it is Garret. My w123 had the Garret from the factory. Turbo is all that is needed to run again. I have a source for one from a 1991 350 SDL. That car had 20,000 miles on fresh MB rebuild, due to rod bending, and car was rear ended a few month after rebuild. Guy kept the car for parts, and still has the turbo. Since I have no w124 experience, I have no idea what turbo was used initially or about the fitment of others from MB diesels.

I decided to pull the trigger, and I will pick up the w124 next Thursday. I will post photos when I get it.

So, is there a special scan tool to buy for the computer?

Pretty sure the OM602's used the T25 while the OM603's used a T3. I may be wrong, but I don't think they're interchangeable.

Also, what do you need a scan tool for? The "computer" on these diesels doesn't do much more than idle speed regulation and EGR control. Search the forums for reading blink codes, you can make a cheap tool or buy a ready-made one on eBay to read blink codes from various body modules.

Good, blink codes! On my VW's, I use the Ross-Tech VCDS. T25. That is what I have read, and the T30 is not compatible. Thanks!

What i usually do is get the VIN of the models (look for one being sold on ebay - the seller often posts the VIN) of which i want to check part interchangeability.

Do the VIN search here: https://www.ilcats.ru/mercedes&language=en/

Look up the part. Write down the part number. (or open another browser side by side) Do the same for the other car. Same part number same part. Different numbers, not so much.
