What’s wrong with this picture?
OM616.912
My water pump housing seems to be missing a bolt... two actually. Now clearly the housing was cast and drilled for 4 bolts but the problem is that there are no holes tapped into the block behind either of them. Am I alone in this oddity? |

I bet there is a broken off bolt in the block where that place for a bolt sits.

Could be but two of them? What are the odds? Still I can’t think of a more plausible explanation.

Pretty easy to do with a long enough breaker bar.

Hey 240D.Bill,
The OM616.916 in my '74 doesn't have a bolt in that location. The water pump housing does not have a place for one as part of its casting. I'm guessing that all OM616 blocks are the same in this respect. Here's what the front of mine looks like: And with the pump housing installed: Maybe you have a later style water pump housing on your engine. From a OM617?

From the Engine Book
Here's an image from the cooling system section in the FSM for OM615, OM616, and OM617NA, showing what I assume to be a later version of the water pump housing:
The book doesn't indicate on what engine this was introduced.

Very interesting...
That makes a lot of sense. God only knows how or where these parts were sourced. The engine plate indicates a factory rebuild. Oddly the engine number has been removed with a grinder. That’s always been a red flag for theft in the past but when I inquired in the past more than one person told me that Mercedes does that on a rebuild. It works so I guess I can’t complain. Thanks for all the feedback and photos.
