This might be the problem?

Well took off the valve cover and checked the chain.

Chain is tight and clearly can see the chain rubbed against the cover to fracture it.

So I removed the tensioner and it came apart in pieces? I assume this could be the problem?

SO, should I try to put in new tensioner and valve cover and give it a try? I really dont want to spend much money on this car since I dont plan on driving it and really worst case can part it out and make a little money?

Again thanks for all the help, if this was a 107 I would have it on the road by now, but these diesel are whole different animal.

The rest of the tensioner is in the timing cover, you remove the big bolt, not the cap bolt. Given the state of what you pulled out, probably due for replacement of the whole thing and an oil change pronto.

Unless the head was replaced much later on, it'll be a 17 casting.

I would definitely try to save that car. It will be worth what you put into it and some given the rarity and ownership history.

Time will tell the value of the 350SD/SDL cars. They're some of the lowest production volume W126es made and by far the nicest driving of the diesels offered in that chassis. Unfortunately their reputation for "rod bending" has soiled their appeal and a really nice condition 350SD typically sells for less than a run-of-the-mill 300SD. The future will determine if they ever get the appreciation they deserve. My 350SD has become my daily driver, and I'd have it no other way.

Lots of the cars that were disposable 10-15 years ago are insanely expensive now. I remember 67-72 Chevy trucks being easily found for under $2k, now worse ones are selling for $7500-$10k. Even 300SDLs have gone up in price lately, I paid $900 for mine but I haven't seen one listed near me for under $5k in a while.

I have a #18 head I would sell for $375 if you can figure out a way to pick it up from near Sacramento.
