So, just to answer a few questions about the 99 E300TD high RPM at 70mph..
The 722.6 transmission that is in these cars has a locking torque converter, but it's not like the ones most of us are familiar with, it's a PWM lockup which always allows for some slip. Also, the "American" version is geared for Power, not speed or economy like the Euro versions; so high RPM at speed is normal.

This was a week ago on a flat piece of highway N of Fort Worth Texas.
