124 transmission options?

anybody know what the rear end ratio is on the 124 euro diesel?

? ....what about a five speed manual swap? Six speed swap? If all that fails then an od automatic that will bolt in?

It really depends on the model year, gearbox, engine and body style. They're all over the place.

OM603

You should have an OM603 NA, so technically any transmission that bolted to an OM603 or OM602/OM601should be able to mate to it, the bolt pattern is the same. I believe the bolt pattern was shared for most all the inline 6, gas or diesel. Wide selection.

I believe your type of engine was also used in the G wagon, GD300.

Happy hunting

Thanks! Is the six speed included in that group?

The only 6spd available in the US that bolts to the 603 is from the M111 C230/SLK230.

That's a cool linkage on the back of it. Looks like lets the transmission and motor float and resists the torque.

I just had a very nice conversation with David. Turns out there is a larger flywheel. and clutch available for this swap too.

Dear all,

if the requested information is still needed:

I can confirm that the 300 D 5-speed with OM603 (non-turbo) are equipped with a 3.46 differential.
This also applies to the 250 D Turbo (in the US: 300 D 2.5 Turbo) with 5 speed.

Transmission code OM603:
717.430 for the models until mid 89 (standard flywheel)
717.433 for the models from mid 89 (dual mass flywheel)

Transmission code OM602:
717.437 for dual mass flywheel. Don‘t know the equivalent for the standard flywheel.

OM603 transmissions were also used in M103 models (260 E and 300 E) but the 717.437 was only available in the OM 602 turbo models (has a longer ratio in 5th gear) and is a very rare aggregate.

I was using a 93 300 D (non turbo) with 110 HP and 5-speed for 3 years and approx 100 k kms as daily driver. Fuel consumption monitored during this period: 6,4 liters per 100 km.
Very nice and smooth driving and with correctly adjusted and overhauled shifter and shifting linkage it felt very good and shifting was exactly. Good transmission oil also improves gearbox smoothness. I was using different types and had the best results with Castrol B-75 W which is initially developed for BMW and Mini gearboxes.
It‘s a manual transmission fluid with viscosity values that are similar to an ATF.

Clutches can last more than 300 k kms without any problem. Mine was changed at 350 k and it had nearly 80 % friction material remaining. It was only starting to slip because of glazed surface of the friction material.

So if you are going to think about a swap: Do it! The 5-speed transmissions are better than expected and itīs fun riding the big Diesel with such a transmission. Unfortunately the 300 D Turbo was never available with manual transmission.
But here in Germany the Turbos are nearly completely gone. If you find one, you should buy it.
I think about 90% of the 124 Diesels in Germany were delivered as natural aspirated versions.

Currently I have a 300 D with 722.4 auto box and 220 k miles (360 k kms) and very much to my regret I must say that the manual gearbox is preferred. But maybe I change my opinion once I have installed a few of the superior shift kit options...

Sorry for the long text and for any spelling mistakes

Hope it helps.

Warm greetings from cold northern Germany!

EDIT:
Here you can see an acceleration video of my former 300 D so you can get an idea of the performance/shifting points of the 5-speed manual gearbox. 4th gear maximum speed is 170 km/h (approx 105 mph): https://youtu.be/CZ-vH_jmBxE

On the last leg through Ill and In running about 75 I got 29.3 mpg. Being a practical sort of guy I probably will run the automatic until it begins to cause trouble.
