Question 300D Diffrential

I need to change the diffrential oil on my 87 300D. I found the drain plug but could not find the plug to fill the oil. I would like to know what tools do I need and where is the oil fill plug is located.

Thank you

The drain and fill plugs are about two inches apart on the same side of the differential. They are both large allen bolts requiring a 14mm allen wrench to remove.

(EDIT: This is how it is on my 83 300D. You have a different car, it may not be the same)

Speaking as the owner of a 1987 300D, the fill plug is on the driver's side frontward area of the differential. It is above the metal flange that roughly splits the differential into upper and lower halves.

For access, I jacked up the driver's side rear wheel, (jackstand too) and came in from just in front of that wheel under the car.

It is truely a pain to fill. I had to use a generic plastic syringe (I think it is typically used to measure out 2-stroke motor oil) that allowed me to put in about 2-oz at a time. Naturally some kind of pump device would be easier and faster.

Just remember the ancient procedural rule:

Always remove the filler plug first, before you drain the fluid out through the drain plug. That way you'll never find yourself with a differential which you have successfully emptied but can't get the rusted-in filler plug out to refill.

engrx2, you are in a 'car' town.. if you search around you should be able to find hypoid gear oil in a container with a pump on the top.. plastic... very helpful....
Ken, that must have been a pain because there are a lot of 2oz squirts that go into that space

We have had several people say things like " I had to borrow a car to go to work because I drained it before I tried to remove the fill plug "

All of you have good ideas...

Why dont you just buy a suction gun....?

Its like a turkey baster, but for the garage. You can buy it from any tool truck like snapon, mac, etc.

It looks like a grease gun, but it it sealed and has a hose on the end.
