Rubber Strip on Bumper fell partially off

Hello,

I came out to my car and the rubber strip was hanging off the bumper at about the halfway point. I have put a bungee cord to keep it from falling off.
It looks like there are plastic pieces underneath that were holding it in place
and one broke off. Pictures below. Are these plastic pieces replaceable?, can I just buy new pieces...and what are they called?, if anyone knows.
Someone mentioned to me gluing it on...I can't imagine how I would hold it
in place securely to dry, and it doesn't look like how it was done originally.
Hopefully I can simply buy new parts and reattach.

Thanks much for any advice.
Linda

2 weeks ago I did a google search for stuff to glue rubber to metal. I only remember some of it. Top of the list was Automtive Goop (don't know the drying time on that) I can't remember the next ones in order but there was a Loctite Professional Superglue type jell (would have a fast dry time) and 3-M Weatherstripping Cement.

The superglue would have the short drying time. Just need some patients till it sticks. Can't comment on longevity.

That would be for gluing the rubber directly to the metal of the bumper (cleansed and decreased with brake cleaner).

The other way to go would be to use similar adhesives to glue something to the inside of the rubber to replace the Plastic ones that broke. Unfortunately I don't remember what it looks like under there.

As you found out the bungee cord works to hold it in place. You could use a combination of the bungee cord with some foam rubber against the outer portion of the rubber strip.

Thanks...

Thanks for the advice...I'm wondering though how I'd hold the rubber piece
against the glue strong enough to hold it. The bungee cord would not do it.
I'm hoping to replace the plastic pieces that went into the metal part of
the bumper and held up the piece of rubber. But I will look into the adhesives
you mentioned. Thanks!

What is supposed to happen is that the rigid plastic piece on the inside has tabs on it and slides in the rubber piece. You put the rubber piece on and tap the plastic piece sideways from behind the bumper till it locks in place. If the tabs are broken off you can use sheet metal screws and washers and screw from behind the bumper into the plastic piece. That will hold it forever.

Yeah that’s what I did. Flat head machine screws and nuts drilled through counter sunk holes in the retainer “core” piece. Then pounded the rubber on normally.

However, the OP has to replace the core part. It’s in pieces. Usually the hooks break off underneath but it looks like it has just fallen apart here. There isn’t enough left.

I would suggest hitting a junkyard and getting used parts or alternatively buy this.

This is the front. The back is a different part number. Pretty reasonably priced. Maybe I’d skip the JY.

THanks..I'll take another look and see if I know what you're talking about.
I don't want to get into drilling, etc. No drill, no sheet metal. This part, in the
picture. Would that attach to the bumper and then and black rubber strip attached to that?...

I think the front and rear bumpers work the same. You don't have to drill the bumper to make your old strip work. You put the screws through the bumper in the holes where the mounting tabs used to go and drill directly into the plastic strip. But if its in pieces that probably wont work and the new mounting strip is your best option.

Thanks Shade man....
The guy at peachparts said there are many pieces and he sent me
a schematic of the back bumper, parts, rubber strip....so I can see hopefully
exactly what I need...He didn't want to sell me the wrong part. I can't drill
holes so if that's the case I'll take to my mechanic, but if I can buy a new
part and attach, that would be great...If anyone wants the schematic for
their "collection" I'll be happy to send it -LJ
