How to remove and reinstall 126 window chrome

I need to know how to safely remove the chrome on the outside of the 126 doors. This is the window chrome that is on the door and not the drip rail or anything else.

The chrome with the window squeegee just taps off with a wooden or plastic punch/driver. I think the vertical piece at the back of the window follows probably tapped at the bottom towards the front.

Then finally, the top piece comes off.

I need to know how to remove because whoever pulled them off bent a couple and I have to go visit the parts car.

Once I have good ones, how do they go back on? I tried tapping the piece that goes from the driver's mirror along the top and couldn't get it to seat completely. It seemed to go about 1/2 way on and stop and I didn't want to tap harder and bend or dent anything.

1/2 way means measured perpendicular to the chrome. It seemed like the groove was too tight possibly because of added thickness of new paint.

I can get a pic later if this is unclear.

Don't have time to translate the German but perhaps google can help with that.

You're on the right track with the re-install. Be exact in positioning the trim. Put a piece of plastic or wood on top to dampen/ spread the force of the impact and hammer it home. The term used is "Hammerschläge" which translates to hammer blows so you might have been to conservative which could explain why it didn't seat completely.

I just discovered my link(s) to the FSM don't work.

I've used them for years. I reckon it's back to the downloads and Netscape to access them.

Regarding the FSM, run the AdobeFlash file (.swf) for whatever you're looking for. That will bring up the menu in your default browser. Clicking on a topic will put a copy of the appropriate pdf in your browser's download file.

Regarding installing the window chrome, pull the rubber that the window settles in out of the track. Just let it hang but it was holding my chrome off and preventing it form going on.

Install the top piece of chrome first. To locate correctly start with the clip on the end by the mirror.

Second, install the rear vertical piece working from the top down.
Finally the bottom piece followed by the mirror.

If the ends stick out, it will show because the corners won't match. Put a very slight convex bend in the long piece if necessary. The groove will hold the center in and the ends will be close to the body.

I have to find out if the rubber squeeges are still available. I think only aftermarket and only for the rear doors.

I went to the parts car for the chrome on the rear doors. Lower the window, pull the rubber out of the channel which exposes a screw that holds the vertical metal between the moveable window and the fixed. Pull the metal strip forward, remove the triangle window.
Tap the chrome off using a piece of wood as a drift. The 1st piece that comes off is the vertical piece then the long piece.

After the link went down I had to hunt and peck to access the copy on the HDD.

More details for figuring out chrome install especially if someone else took it apart.

First, remove the lower horizontal chrome with the window seal (Squeege) Remove the same piece on the inside. Use plastic so you don't scratch.

On the rear door windows, roll window down.
Pull the window channel down & let it hang into the car. There is a screw holding the top of the vertical divider. Remove it and the bolt on the interior that holds the bottom of the divider. Pull the triangle window forward and up to work it out of the door.

Be sure to put tape at the forward upper & lower window corners if you care about the paint. Put tape at the rear lower corner for the same reason. Tap the vertical piece out from the bottom. Now tap the long piece down from the top front working to the rear.

To reinstall, decide where the forward corners should be in relation to the indent in the door. Start by alignin the upper front piece where you want it. Tap it into place with a rubber mallet and work your way to the back. Be sure to seat the curve before finishing the lower section.

Now install the forward vertical chrome. Begin at the top making sure to have the 45* cut line up how you want it. Now, work your way down tapping the piece forward.

If yours has been bent or the groove is too wide, gently bend it back into shape. The groove on my long pieces was stretched too wide. I measured the width of one section that I thought was correct. Then I put rubber tubing (vacuum/fuel line) on the jaws of some small vice grips. The vice grips were used to squeeze the groove back into place.

The main thing that will look bad is if you don't get the 45* corners to line up or if something is sticking out. These 4 doors took a long time but the next one will only take a few minutes to get right.
