Yeah I figured since they had been exposed to the elements for who knows how long I should just replace the whole thing.

Thanks everyone for your help. Looks like I'll be picking up a pair of axles from CVJ. Not cheap, but I plan on keeping her around for a long time, so may as well fork out the extra cash and only do the job once. The DSS axles might be ok, especially since they don't have much power to handle, but I think I'll stay away from Chinese parts.

Just ordered a set of DSS the other day. Pulled everything apart and BAM, the things are 1/2 in longer than the originals. Cant get them in no matter what I do.

Are you sure they are fully compressed?

m5m:
In the event that those DSS axles are two piece, bolted joint design, simply unbolt the joint, install the inboard stub (with proper shimming) into the diff, install the outer section into the wheel hub, and bolt the joint back together!

Also make sure they slide all the way into the hubs. I think I have read about some needing attention to the splines so they would slide in. We had to use shorter hub bolts so the splines would go all the way in.

Yeah, I've had issues where the splines are machined slightly wrong and had to file them a bit to get the axles fully seated. You hate to have to do that but do at your own risk.

Like DSS, these are totally new China made annular axles as opposed to the rebuilt original MB axles from CVJ.

I've also had zero problems with the same axles - going on almost 3 years in a daily driver

I replaced a failed half shaft with a DSS one in Jan 2018. It fitted into the differential and keyed in place neatly with no slop using the shim from the failed half shaft. I had to unbolt the diff carrier, lift and tilt the diff and then undo the ram on the trailing arm to work the axle into position on the hub. I don't know if they are always that tight to fit. Since then I have covered about 50,000 km with no problems., so my experience is positive.

I've recently picked up a 1983 240D. Both axles have shredded boots and the previous owner said it has been like this for quite some time. As such, I'm looking to put two new axles into it, but as far as I can tell, the only axles available are DSS. I've heard horror stories about the quality of this particular brand for other makes i.e. BMW and Volvo. Anyone have any experience with these? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

two of my three 123 cars have needed new axles. CVJ was the rec to me in 2007 and 2011. They are still fine but have fine cracks appearing in the boots. I will go with Astoria if and when I need to reboot.

(They were still available here in 2020 for the W123). For a daily reliable that will put on a lot of miles, by all means look at CVJ. Otherwise....

If it is a $2000 car, is it worth putting a pair of CVJ reman axles on it that might cost quite a bit, especially if cores are bad, as OP's seem to be. $900?? (my guess) vs about $110 for a pair of GSP axles?
Agree with this statement 100%. Every situation is unique, of course.

In light of this, I was hoping the OP "Überlandung Geländewagen" wouldn't mind sharing a few details of his recent find? Mileage, condition, etc. And, as always, especially during this time of insane used car prices, wondering what he gave for it? Seeing as how he's in San Diego, chances are the car is pretty nice (unlike my locale of the "rust belt").
