15 inch wheels for W123
I've been reading about the 15" Bundt wheels that bolt right on to the W123. Those likely rare and spendy, some of the knockoffs not so much perhaps. Maybe it's a fool's errand. Looking like $200 apiece if you could find them.
I'm looking for 2 more 14 inch wheels and not having much luck. The photos of arrived rigs at Pick 'n Pull show 123s with nice looking wheels, not sure where they go. I did find a spare with a good looking tire that wouldn't hold air. So one wheel more would do. Put another 14 inch tire on and it's now my spare. My original spare is a studded tire (Oregon car) in great shape - but pulling the studs out is major work. Looks like a several hour project unless I come up with a better method. I like getting excellent tires at P'nP for cheap. You have to examine them pretty closely. Having two extra wheels makes the mounting and swapping more convenient. Lately there are many, many more 15" tires to be had at P'nP than 14". Plenty of 13"s as well, 14 inchers seem to be on the wane in the auto world. But doesn't make a lot of sense to spend $800 on 4 wheels so I can save a few hundred on tires. I'm not even sure the look is that much better. The 14s have the more stock look of course. Maybe I spoke too soon. Here's a set of four (8 hole) with the 5x112 bolt pattern for $125, $90 shipping. Not sure how well I'd like that style. Pretty sure there are possibe wheel incompatability issues I'm not aware of. https://tinyurl.com/2ebkc8mc Here's a pic sporting them. Nice car, the look is different, that's certain. Might be 16s.

The new 15” Bundts with new center caps with shipping will run you in the ballpark of $2,400. Add quality tires and you’re north of $3k. If you can find 15” Bundts at $200 I would grab them. That’s worth the core value for those rims

Simple Tire Question...
Quote:
You can take your pick (very cheap). All the tires hold air, but have exposed treads and/or very old. Send me a PM. 'Desert Rose' now has 15 inch Fuchs bundts, and 'Stormcloud' now has 15 inch Maxilite (aftermarket) bundts installed after both left 16 inch Lorinser rims got damaged slamming into the curb. 'Stomcould' fishtailed due to failed rear trailng arm bushings, fortunately no other property damage, no injuries, nor other parties involved.

Dang, you don't hear every day about failed rear trailng arm bushings leading to grief. But there is a lot going on with an automobile. 3400 lbs doesn't go at high speed in a straight line by accident.

I was thinking the knockoffs might go for $200. Even that is probably way optimistic.

... As an option I believe. I had a 1983 380se (euro) that also came with them from the factory. I’m pretty sure many people can attest to owning gen1 500sel with 14” wheels (from the factory).

Did you guys see these on BaT? Nothing special, just clean 14's for over $1000! Wishing I didn't scrap the last set I had to make room in the garage....
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/bundt-wheels-for-mercedes/ You can find some aftermarket ones on eBay from Europe. I was never able to find any state side. I went back and forth on them for a while then decided to take a chance. They're pretty nice.

I can't tell just how swappable Mercedes wheels are. My SDL has the 15 hole/spoke variety. Seems that most of the wheels share the 5x112 pattern. The other possible issues are what give me pause. Like offset, or maybe that would be indentation. How rim width relates to section width is something I'm still learning about. In the mid 70s I stuck gynormous tires on my first rig, a '59 International Travelall panel. I forget the numbers, pretty sure the wheels were 16". I wasn't sure they would fit the wheels but I gave it a shot and it worked fine, for a few months. Then the wheels started splitting apart. I like the look of the Bundts and am curious of the effect in 15". OTOH, a set of the 15" 15 hole would be a lot cheaper, and those are more sober than the 7 or 8 hole variety - too loud for me. Speaking of which, any guess on the wheels in the black 123 in the OP? Seems like 16" to me. I'm old school, I've not yet owned a vehicle with 17 or 18" wheels so any benefits of unsprung weight, handling from that are something I've only read about. I gather there are 16" Mercedes wheels with the 5X112 pattern, the hard part for me is knowing if I'd notice the difference much. This car handles pretty well right now on the I-5 Oregon and Nor Cal mountains but I can sorta feel the ballon-i-ness of the tires. Me and my first big tired Int. Truck, about '75:

cmac:
In your initial post above, you supplied a link to a set of eight hole wheels for sale. The e-bay listing contains erroneous information about the offset (ET). The listing says the ET is 23; the actual ET is 37. With an ET of 37, spacers of 12-15mm will be required. |

This is the sort of thing about which I'm ignorant. Offset is distance away from the wheel? I couldn't imagine it had anything to do with lug nut spacing.
Another thing I don't know, is this sort of thing mostly a cosmetic exercise or do you feel improvment in handling and braking?
