Since we are talking about Calipers...don`t buy them from O`Really`s.
I was doing a brake job on the 240. Ordered new front Calipers to replace the ATE`s. Picked up the new one`s and gave them the old for the Core. Replaced the R/F, tightened it down, and the Rotor would not turn. Removed it to give it once over, and bolted it back on. Same thing. Installed the other side and the same thing....HMMMM. Removed one off a 80 240 I picked up because girls just don`t check the oil, and has a Rod hanging through a new window in the block. This car has ATE`s Put it on the 240 I was working on, and the rotor will turn. Put the replacement on back on but left the bolts a bit loose, and could move the Rotor, but heard a scraping sound. Then see a scratched line in the rust on the Hat part of the Rotor. These Calipers must have been made in India or???some 3rd world country. the castings are rough and thicker to where it fits tight onto the hat part. Took them back, and the guy said they were ATE`s. No where is ATE on the replacement Caliper. They ordered a 2nd set and were the same. Turned them back in and got my money back. But need the old Calipers to turn in when I go to another store. "OH we deducted the core off the price etc...". Finally called the corp office and the guy said they should give you the money. Went back and got it. Went to NAPA, and they had the ATE front Calipers, painted nice pretty black and ATE in the casting. The real deal. Bottom line, keep the old Calipers till you are sure the new one`s are the right one`s. I like to buy local, but at least sell the right stuff. Another reason to not order on line, and then also the hastle of mailing the old one`s back. Charlie |
The Core Problem
Yet again.
I got one Chinese made L.F. brake caliper on one of my W123's from Pelican, the TD I *think* . It's working out fine but I too try to not use off brand critical parts if possible . Never, EVER turn in any core no matter how simple, basic and worthless it may be until the job is 1,000 % finished to your satisfaction ! . |

Update: Figured out the issue lol the brake pads I installed were so thick it wasn't letting the caliper decompress

Makes sense. The ATE and Bendix take different thickness brake pads. Forget which takes the thinner one. So the thinner ones will work on both ATE or Bendix while the thicker will only work on one.
Aside - I read somewhere that ATE is actually pronounced ah-tuh-ay. Does that sound right to you guys? I always said A tee eee. |

Alfred's body is spinning in it's grave by now :P . The pads are 15 or 17 MM IIRC, not all catalog listings mention the difference |
Some pad manufacturers are making all pads to meet the thinner specs so that they fit whatever calipers are on the car.

That's a shame .
I'm prolly going to need new pads ere long, maybe ceramic this time . My coupe has "Kleen Wheels" diffusers and they work pretty well, maybe get a set for the 240D . (?) |
