717.400 5 speed needs new ouput flange
I had a breakdown with my '85 euro 300TD NA 5 speed (123.190 body) the other day. The giubo/flex disk lost a bolt and blew off a big chunk. The bearing on the output shaft inside the giubo got chewed up as well. I got a replacement flex disk and bearing but then found that one arm of the output flange was shredded as well.
I found the attached exploded view of the rear of the 717.400 tranny. Part 123 (listed as 1262620045, superseded to 1243531745) looks like the flange, with part 1239900060 being the nut that holds it on. I found the attached diagram on the nemigaparts.com website. Before I drop the $200 on these parts, is there anyone who can confirm whether these part numbers are correct? And if so, is replacing the flange as simple as undoing the nut and pulling the flange from the tranny shaft splines? Can I reasonably expect to do this with the tranny in the car? Oh and what is the trick to getting the nut off? What size wrench does it take? |

The slotted nut needs to be unstaked, and a 4 prong socket is used to remove the unstaked slotted nut.
New nut needs to be tighten to a FSM specified torque and then a FSM speciied endplay, before it is staked. I don't have access to that FSM info. A staked slotted nut is also used (with a crush sleeve) on the pinion shaft, also on the right and left rear wheel hub shaft. My guess is that a crush sleeve is also used on the output shaft, which may make it very difficult to replace the output yoke with the transmission mounted in the car. You may want to farm this job out to an experieced, reputable MB transmission rebuilder. Remember that many shops will NOT install customer supplied parts. To remove the unstaked slotted nut, a JTC-1615 4-prong socket might work. I removed the slotted pinion nut from a 185mm 3.07 ratio W116 300SD differential with this tool (instead of the $$$ MB special tool). This was to harvest the drive shaft flange so I can later transplant it to a 210mm 2.65 ratio differential. Note: there is an updated 12 point (double hex) pinion nut to replace the slotted pinion nut. This may be interchangable with the slotted nut on your transmission's output shaft.
