vacuum system

The vacuum pump on my 1982 300sd produces about 20 inches of vacuum at idle measured at the pump. My locks don't function automatically and I've read that chasing down the problem is more of a nuisance than a technical challenge. What else does the vacumm system control / assist on this car? I've read that the vacuum system is even involved in the cliamte control. Are the various systems separate, so that a leak in the door lock system messes up the climate control too.

Well it's my understanding, at least it is with my car, that the central locking is seperate. My car (and I'm betting yours does too) has a pump under the rear seat on the passenger side. Take the rear seat out and operate the central locking. If you don't hear the pump whirring then there's your problem. Either a fuse or a dead pump or a bad switch that turns it on. If the pump works, then you're dealing with bad lines. Luckily mine works perfectly. My pump has 2 lines that come off of it, and then they split further down the line. One for the trunk and fuel door, the other for the passenger doors.

On the 300SD the pump is in the trunk's spare tire well.

Does anyone have a diagram of the vacuum lines for the climate control for the 190D? Mine is a 2.2L diesel, 1984, with 288k miles. Mine is leaking like a sieve and there are splices with other type vacuum hose when prior mechanics were too lazy to track the system down and replace it OEM. Now I have to spend some time under the tree replacing all the lines as a start. What's original is very brittle and needs to be replaced.

I wish my haynes manual covered the ENTIRE vacuum system in depth like that. I would expect the manual on CD and the older one in the book would have that all covered. Luckily my vacuum system is all in fine running order.
