95 E300D Sachs Fan Clutch question
Finally going to try to get parts to address slight overheating problem.
Planning to replace fan clutch with the SACHS brand and install Mercedes brand fan made for the 98-99 E300. Stopped at Park Place Mercedes this week to check on prices and availability. Was told they could only locate one fan clutch and it was in California. Price about $450. Is the SACHS fan clutch that is readily available from different suppliers 'the same good quality' as the SACHS ' Horton ' version available from Mercedes? Just a little concerned due to current low price of SACHS available from the internet suppliers. Added another question, Which thermostat version would be best to install for typically hot weather driving? |

BEHR makes very good fan clutches and it's readily available for ~$100
98-99 e300 is a w210 and you have a w124 so make sure the fan will fit the shroud. A stock fan should do just fine |

Instead of replacing the fan clutch which doesn't do much to cool the engine anyway, pull out the aux fan shroud and clean out the condenser.

I’ve tried all the clutch brands and they all suck. The only one that actually pulled air at idle was the uro. Personally I’d ditch the clutch and put an good electric fan in there.

Questions related to fan and fan clutch received
I did a lot of searching for the Sachs 'Horton' fan clutch for the 98/99 E300D and the Mercedes brand fan for a 98/99.
Found them both on a website with free shipping and reasonable puchase price. Pictures are attached 1. Fan Clutch is a Sachs 'Horton' brand but appears to have been made in Nov 15th, 2003. It shows what appears to be corroded ' rebuild ' residue on the thermal plate. I was expecting a new one made in the past year or so. 2. Mercedes fan, initially I thought it was a cheap Chinese knockoff due to the white printed label from a company called Newparts not the company name I ordered from. After looking closer I found a Mercedes logo and part #. I'm still a little concerned it might be a mirror image copy of the Mercedes part. I'm concerned because they sent a ' probably rebuilt ' fan unit that was made 18 years ago. The link to the web page for the clutch is: e Euro parts . com part 2100024032 https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/169409/Engine-Cooling-Fan-Clutch-2100024032/ to me it should have been a new one since it wasn't mentioned to be rebuilt. What are your thoughts? |

Re: Which thermostat for hot weather driving? Are there factory options for thermostats on your model? If yes, what are the temps?
You may already be aware...a properly operating thermostat only regulates the minimum operating temperature. Properly operating means it opens at its specified temp rating and it opens to an amount that allows sufficient coolant flow.
