I usually use ATF, but in a pinch I've used white lithium grease from a spray can. It got everywhere, but it worked.

That would be whatever Dextron ATF was back at the time which in my case was 1984.

That is from section 3022 of the Maintenance Manual.

That is what I have always done. I think I learned it from an old-time experienced mechanic who used to work on my cars. I would think any Dextron ATF would work.

Wheel bearing grease. I just take a screw driver and scoop a little dob out and scrape it into the sockets.

It is sticky and thick so it should stay viable for decades.

Agree, I like the durability of grease. I’ve used all kinds of stuff on these over the years but I’ve finally settled on cv grease. Mainly because I have a lot leftover and it seems to work well.
