OBD1 code reader recommendation
Any recommendations on a code reader for my 99 e300. I do have the a product from China that worked great for the first few years but today I'm locked out. Any Code readers you have tried that will give me access to info such as SRS would be a great help.im working on door and side curtain airbags and would like to see the state of the sensors. Anybody try the 38 pin to OBD2 adapter? I have a generic OBD2 Bluetooth transmitter that I use with torque and it lets me clear check engine light. It shows no other codes even with two blown airbags. Thanks in advance.

On the W210 it is actually OBDII but it is first generation. They only put the functions explicitly required in the first draft of the OBDII spec in the under dash connector. These are the emissions related codes for the ECU. And that is all you can get from that connector.
The other computers on the car (including the SRS module) have a dedicated data line to one of the 38 pins on the connector in the front relay/fuse box. In order to read these other computers, you either need the official tool (called a HHT which are no longer available), a C3 or C4 multiplexer and Xentry software (look on eBay) or there is an Autel MS906 scanner that can talk at the module level to each computer on a W210. The 38 pin to OBDII adapters just pass the engine data line out from the 38 pin port through to the OBDII side of the adapter, which is no different than plugging in under the dash. |
Thanks Jay. I was not sure what info passed through the OBD2 port. Now I know and it's appreciated.
