Springs? Brake Fluid Reservoir Caps (with pics!)

1982 W123 Turbo Diesel

I attempted to pressure bleed my brake system today and I suspect one of the small sensor seal caps on top of the reservoir is leaking. Neither of the two caps have any visible cracks, but when I started to pump up the pressure, a little brake fluid started to seep from one of the caps and I couldn't get any pressure to build up. No other visible leaks anywhere else.

When I removed both caps to inspect them, I noticed that the cap closest to the windshield has a spring under it, giving it resistance. But, the other cap, closest to the front of the car does not have one. I searched and searched online to see if I could verify whether both caps are supposed to have springs, but came up with nothing.

My two questions are:

1. Did both caps on top of the reservoir come with springs from the factory?

2. Even though both caps don't have visible cracks, are they the weakest links that are likely causing the inability to pump air into the reservoir (there was slight seepage from the forward cap without the spring)?

Thanks for addressing either (or both) of my questions.

Brook

If you were pressure bleeding maybe the pressure is causing the leaks.

Yes, highly likely, especially if these caps are on the older, brittle side. I'm going to order brand new caps and attempt again to pressure bleed. From what I've read on the internet, if there is a leak at the cap(s), replace and try again.

I'm still trying to find out of there should be springs under BOTH caps. Any insight?

There were a variety of significant changes made to W123 diesel vehicles beginning with model year 1983. On my 1983, I never encountered springs as you describe them and have never read of or heard others reference such springs. Unless you come across springs in the process of looking at the applicable parts diagrams, I would doubt their existence.

There's definitely a spring under one of my caps, which makes me question the other one and if it's missing (?).

Do you know where I can find a parts diagram for a 1982 W123?

Thanks

Here are some pics of my set-up, showing the brand of reservoir, the caps, and the one spring under the sensor cap. Does anyone have this same reservoir and is willing to pop off their caps to see if there are springs under them?

Yes, there should be.

Thank you......are you certain of this because you have seen both springs before with this particular reservoir?

I think that your issue is not that you are missing a spring. The problem is that you are seeing a spring that should not be visible because the spring is not being retained as it should be. For sure, both switches should be spring loaded. Pressing them allows testing of the brake warning indicator lamp on the instrument panel. Does your front switch have "spring action" when depressed?

The springs are integral to the reservoir; they won't appear in a parts diagram.
