RIV timing question
Anyone familiar with the RIV timing method?
I followed the procedure in the FSM but the B light came on first and it's supposed to be the A light What's happening? I'm rotating the engine clockwise if you're facing it from the front.

Isn't it in the manual what to do if all does not happen as planned? My educated guess is that if the lights are not acting as they should that is an indication that the Fuel Injection Pump needs the timing adjusted. If there is no mark present from the Engine Block a cross to the Fuel Injection pump mounting flange make a mark a cross so you can return the fuel injection pump to where you started if you have to. Rotate the Engine in the direction of rotation coming up on the compression stroke and end up on the timing marks you are supposed to be on (15 degrees after top dead center on mine). Loosen the 3 Fuel Injection Pump Flange Nuts sufficiently to rotate the Fuel Injection Pump slowly one direction or the other till the lights display as they are supposed to tighten down the 3 Flange Nuts. Note that it is easier to rotate the Fuel Injection Pump if you loosen the Fuel Injection Hard Lines at the Injectors. If you were using the full RIV method you would need a special clamp that holds the Fuel Injection pump in position and has a threaded rod to rotate the Fuel Injection Pump while the Engine is running at a specific rpm (since 2007 I have not read of anyone doing that). The A and B light is a form of static timing. Also there is a gasket between the Fuel Injection Pump and the Engine. It is unknown if rotating the Fuel injection pump will cause it to leak/seep. There should be some threads in the repair links section.

The pump just was rebuilt last week. I was using the RIV tool to check the timing because there is still a bit of shake at idle. The manual says 15 degrees + or - 1 degree after TDC
The FSM says turn the engine over by hand until the A light comes on and then slowly until the A and B light are on and look at the timing. The B light came on first. The FSM says nothing about that

The sensor head that goes into the IP is made of 2 proximity sensors side by side. One wired to the A LED and the other to the B LED.
The idea is so you can see the approach and departure of the timing tang as it passes by the slot as you rotate. If the B comes on first followed by the A and then the B goes off and the A goes off as you rotate one of these things must be the reason - the AB light is wired backwards - The sensor is inserted upside down (not sure if that’s possible as it may be keyed) - You’re turning the engine backwards. It’s supposed to be clockwise facing the front. Never mind on that, you said you were in the first post. This video shows the procedure. Note this is a 606 engine but the concept is the same for a 617. https://youtu.be/2DHD6UoALto

I am rotating the engine in the correct direction. I will see if the sensor can be turned 180°. I thought I installed it the way the FSM said to

Sorry I saw that about the rotation after I re-read your first post. I agree it’s got to be the direction of installation of the sensor, if it has no key I would try flipping it over and see what happens.

It does have a key and will only go in one way.

How is the end of the blade that can be viewed from inside of the fuel injection pump looking? There is a device called a timing locking pin that can also go into that port to hold the the timing in position when you insert it into the Engine. Since it is not made for use with the engine running a previous owner might have left it and ran the engine damaging the blade inside.
There of course there could also be an issue with the A and B light itself.

I assume it's OK. I just got it back from United Diesel Service in South El Monte. $850.
My mechanic installed it. There is still a little rocking when cold and more when it's warm. I need to install the new rack damper bolt I have. The engine does sound good and no more smoke. The delivery valves were gummed up. With A and B lit I was at 16 degrees BTDC. That seems to be within spec. I have a new set of rebuilt injectors I can install but the ones in there I rebuilt, pulled them again to double check before the pump went for a rebuild.
